‘Complete chaos’ at airport after false evacuation order

June 4, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

“Evacuate! Please evacuate this area immediately!” An order like that, bellowed though loudspeakers and sometimes accompanied by alarm bells, is guaranteed to catch people’s attention at an airport – even when the alarm is entirely false.

Passengers at Dublin Airport reacted with confusion as a malfunctioning public address system told them: “Attention please: we are responding to an alarm activation. Please evacuate this area immediately and follow the directions of airport staff.”

The automated voice was yet another example of a robot going haywire. Somehow it got stuck in evacuation mode.

Eventually, the airport assured passengers that no evacuation was underway and that staff were working to fix the problem, reported.

“There is a fault with our PA system at our Pier 1 gates @DublinAirport,” embarrased airport authorities announced on Twitter. “The system is stuck on evacuation mode. There is NO evacuation of this area. Our sound engineers are currently investigating.”

Some passengers described the scene as “complete chaos”, with one commenting that he wouldn’t like to see how the airport handled a real emergency.

These things do occasionally happen. Better to hear “Evacuate, evacuate!” than the old Dalek command from the early Dr Who episodes: “Exterminate, exterminate!”
