Conscious change comes to AYANA Komodo Resort, Waecicu Beach

Since opening in September 2018, AYANA Komodo Resort, Waecicu Beach has created a buzz across the Indonesian archipelago, with a deep level of care initiated by the independently owned brand, pledging to set the benchmark in nurturing the local ecosystem.

AYANA Komodo Resort, situated on the island of Flores, has introduced a series of interesting and impactful initiatives to protect the resort’s surrounding land and sea while actively educating guests on the importance of sustainability and environmental consciousness.

“AYANA Cares is the motto that pulses through our brand and there is no greater time for us to take more impactful strides towards caring for our planet,” explains AYANA Komodo Resort’s General Manager, Fernando Arroyo. “The new hotel represents the opportunity for us to think about how we contribute to the environment, with a collective aim for this positive approach to ripple through to our team members, guests, and even our competitors.”

Upcoming initiatives include but are not limited to:

  • Marine Biology Expert: AYANA introduces resident Marine Biologist, Jingjing Yan who holds a Masters in Biological Oceanography and has worked as a Marine Biologist in Europe and the Maldives. Jingjing will study the reef’s biodiversity, joining guests on designated excursions to provide education and awareness on protecting the ocean and marine life, through workshops and presentations.
  • Children’s Programs: The Kids Club will offer a series of fun activities including weekly coral planting programs and fun craft activities using recycled material. The program will also invite families to participate in regular beach clean ups.
  • Local Education: With no greater ambassador than the local community, the AYANA team will invest resources in visiting schools to educate younger societies on the importance of proper rubbish disposal and caring for marine life.
  • Sustainable Sourcing: Each morning AYANA’s chefs will purchase the catch of the day from local fishermen. Delivered directly to Naga Pier, the best pick will be presented to AYANA before being sold at local fish markets; providing a way to stock the resort’s six restaurants and ensure a thriving business relationship with local fishermen.

In addition to its conscious change efforts, AYANA Komodo Resort is investing locally. This month the resort donated 344 new uniforms for 86 rangers and naturalist guides at Komodo National Park on Rinca Island as part of the resort’s expansive corporate social responsibility program. The uniforms were personally presented by Mr. Fernando Arroyo to the custodians of Komodo National Park.

AYANA Komodo Resort staff members will also organise hospitality training sessions for the rangers, as well as English language classes. The training will ensure top notch service is experienced by international and local travellers when visiting Komodo National Park.

AYANA Komodo Resort pledges to continue supporting Komodo National Park in 2019, with the resort currently working on a project to renovate and rebuild toilet facilities within the park, to be announced upon completion.
