Coral Expeditions Star in SBS Slow Summer Broadcast

December 10, 2018 Cruise No Comments Email Email

Australia’s pioneering cruise line, Coral Expeditions, will star in SBS Slow Summer to bring an expedition cruise experience of the Kimberley coastline to Australian TV audiences in January 2019.

In a unique and distinct broadcast style, viewers will have the chance to experience and explore the breathtaking Kimberley Coast as seen aboard flagship vessel, the Coral Discoverer.

Described as a mesmerising escape from the busy pace of modern life, the groundbreaking forum of Slow TV is a perfect fit for Coral Expeditions’ ethos and approach to destination travel; go slow, immerse yourself and take the time to explore the lesser known parts of Australia.

“We are very proud to have been approached by Mint Pictures and SBS to participate in this unique opportunity and to bring this journey to a wider public,” said Coral Expeditions Commercial Director, Jeff Gillies. “The Slow TV concept aligns exceptionally well with our overall approach to cruising because of our unique destinations and shore-rich programmes.

“Our shallow-draught ships can access areas that larger ships cannot, and our expedition cruises are coastal explorations rather than ocean voyages in which we take the time to connect and get closer to nature, history and culture.

Mr Gillies continues: “After SBS success with its initial The Ghan project, we connected and over the past 10 months have collaborated with the team creating a production worthy of the magnificent Kimberley.

With over 25 years of expertise in the Kimberley, Coral Expeditions were able to bring a great deal of vision and value to the scope and logistics of the production.”

Gary Wilson, Coral Expeditions Senior Master adds: “The footage captured by the film crew really highlighted the best of our Kimberley expedition. It was the perfect trip and guests and the crew enjoyed the usual level of natural wonder, excitement and surprise that the Kimberley offers. From hungry crocodiles to frolicking humpbacks, and rushing tides to islands emerging from the sea, this trip had it all. The film makers have captured a unique insight into life at sea with a range of challenging camera angles and capturing crew behind the scenes and in action in a truly authentic manner.”

Managing Director of Mint Pictures, Adam Kay said: “Right from the outset, the team at Coral Expeditions understood what Slow TV was all about. They went above and beyond logistically to ensure we met all the challenges of filming in ‘The Kimberley’. The result is a stunning portrayal of the region and one that the broadcaster is very happy about!”

Nature lovers, adventurers and marine enthusiasts alike are encouraged to save the date and tune in to enjoy the “Slow Summer Kimberley Cruise” broadcast event on Sunday 13 January 2019 at 7.30pm on SBS (3 hours) or streamed live on SBS On Demand. The journeys will be repeated on SBS VICELAND the following week on Saturday 19 January.

In a gesture to add to the viewer experience, Coral Expeditions are pleased to offer and mail a free Kimberley Cruise Map to those interested to follow the chart of the expedition.
