It used to be empty toilet roll shelves in supermarkets but according to consumer advocate Choice, misleading retail advertising is the latest tactic fuelling buyer anxiety in Australia.

CHOICE is calling on Australian brands not to take advantage of the COVID-19 crisis with pushy sales tactics. This is a disgraceful marketing tactic, says spokesperson Jonathan Brown.

We have found multiple examples of one brand using terms like “Stock up now before its all gone.”
“The Prime Minister has called for calm and we think this advice should apply to the business community too. We need all brands to be responsible and support the community to navigate these challenges, rather than cash in on fear, Mr Brown said.

“We’re actively looking out for businesses that see an opportunity to take advantage of people who are worried – through misleading advertising, price gouging or shonky health claims,” he added.
