Cruise & Maritime Voyages Provides Support to Devastated Mozambique

Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) this week invited guests on board its ship Astor to contribute to assisting the humanitarian crisis in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Astor visited Maputo, in the south of Mozambique, on Sunday 24 March. CMV invited its guests to help the aid and relief programme in recognition of the current crisis in Mozambique. CMV started the ball rolling with a sizeable donation and then matched donations received on board dollar for dollar, raising AU $14,060 for the relief programme.

“The people of Mozambique are facing a crisis with the amount of flooding in the northern region,” said Dean Brazier, Managing Director of CMV Australia.

“As an organisation, we’re committed to supporting the destinations we visit and we’re thankful that we are able to give back to the region in this time of need.

“It is heartening to know that our guests are also very passionate about giving back, as we can see from their generous donations to this cause.”

Maputo is in the south of Mozambique and is largely unaffected by the recent Cyclone Idai. However, almost 1,200 square miles of the country in the northern Beira coastal region have been flooded, leaving thousands without food, clean water or shelter.

“CMV has chosen to donate to the UK-based DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee), an umbrella emergency relief charity supporting 14 UK aid charities including Christian Aid, Save the Children, the British Red Cross, and Oxfam,” said Chris Coates, Group Commercial Director of CMV.

“This appeal has been well supported by guests, raising thousands to help the people of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe at this difficult time.”

The 21,000grt Astor is currently on a 43-night northbound voyage from Australia to the UK with 552 guests on board.
