The Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region is ready to take bookings from Queenslanders following the announcement of travel being permitted within the State.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) launched the Drive North Queensland campaign across the State with Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen bungy jumping at AJ Hackett Cairns.

“Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is open for business to all Queenslanders for the Winter school holidays which is traditionally a very busy time for our destination,” he said.

“The Drive North Queensland campaign has already started on television directing travellers to drivenorthqueensland.com.au to plan an itinerary taking in the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s oldest rainforest and the Outback.

“The region’s tour operators have been implementing COVID-safe workplace plans and are ready to welcome visitors.

“The industry is thrilled the easing of travel restrictions had been brought forward to today (June 1)  in response to the great work by health professionals and the community.

“Intrastate travel is worth $4 million a day to our region and allowing Queenslanders to travel within their State gives the tourism industry the opportunity to once again generate visitor expenditure for our economy.

“The industry eagerly awaits further advice from the Premier on when it is possible to open the state’s borders. Once that happens our region’s recovery can start in earnest as interstate travellers inject $6 million a day into the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef economy.

“When the borders open we will expand the Drive North Queensland campaign interstate to encourage southerners to fly to Cairns for their drive holiday.

“The Drive North Queensland campaign across television, print and online will generate $1 million in publicity through partner channels and generate 60,000 website visitors from a reach of 750,000 viewers.”

Drive North Queensland is a partnership with TTNQ, Tourism and Events Queensland, The Savannah Way, Cook Shire Council, Tropical Coast Tourist, Tourism Port Douglas & Daintree, Tablelands Tourism, Townsville Enterprise, Mackay Tourism, Tourism Whitsundays, Outback Queensland Tourism Association, WIN TV, Australian Tourist Publications and Outdoria.
