Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Melaka commemorates the Earth Day 2019 with a special event showcasing its contributions towards the environment through its eco-friendly initiatives. http://www.stevecafeandcuisine.com/This is in line with the Wyndham Hotel Groups’ commitment to improving the health and sustainability of our planet and hence encouraging the emergence of eco-friendly hotels of which our hotel is proud to be part of.

Recognizing the need to play our part in ensuring a greener and cleaner environment, our hotel has undertaken various steps and projects to make this a possibility. Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Melaka has gone to great extents throughout the past year through its many initiatives either carried out on an overall basis or through its respective departments. From energy and water conservation efforts, mechanical and lightings fittings to involvement from all the respective departments.

“Conserving our environment is the responsibility of every person and that includes the hotel and its associates who have been tasked with ensuring that the hotel practices a ‘green’ culture within and beyond the doors of the hotel”, said General Manager, Mr. Klaus Sennik.

The event which took place at the hotel lobby on Friday morning, 26th April 2019 saw the representatives from the various departments at hand to showcase their respective initiatives while also featuring their future initiatives to be undertaken within the next few months. Commencing with an inspiring speech by the hotel’s General Manager, Mr. Klaus Sennik who is instrumental is initiating the “say no to plastic straws” campaign this year, the event then ensued with a speech by Chief Operating Officer (CEO) from the Melaka Green Technology Corporation (Perbadanan Teknologi Hijau Melaka), Tuan S. Chandru who acknowledged our hotel’s participation and support towards the green initiatives.

The hotel associates who were gathered and dressed in the 5 colors representing the colors of the newly launched PLA straws then proudly displayed their efforts and initiatives in their respective departments as it was read out. Commencing with the Food & Beverage Department who showcased their use of eco-friendly napkins, PLA cups, eco-friendly breakfast menu card and their most recent initiative, the usage of PLA straws to replace the plastic straws.

The Housekeeping Department then presented their initiatives in the form of the usage of laundry baskets instead of plastic based bag which were previously used to deliver the pressed and cleaned items to the guests’ rooms. This conversion was also done to their laundry bags which are now replaced with the non-woven bags.  The bin liners which are made from eco-friendly paper was also another initiative recently introduced. The linen cards placed on guests’ beds and hung in the bathrooms is another important step to reduce toxic detergents which are needlessly dumped into the water supply everyday. The card introduced under the Wyndham Green initiative, encourages guests to hang their towels or simply indicate with the placement of this card on their pillow for us to make us their beds with the same linen instead of replacing it with new ones.

The Engineering Department whose ‘green’ initiatives have commenced since 3 years ago hence bagging our hotel the green award in the hotel category for 3 years in a row commencing 2015 until 2017, were proud to showcase some of their initiatives which continue to reduce energy, electricity and carbon emission. With the use of the Stimo as an alternative to clean the air-conditioning coils to eliminate emission of gas chemicals, the use of solar panels on our roofs for the hot water system, LED bulbs throughout the hotel, electrodes placed in the water to prevent bacteria formation and eradicate air borne diseases, the usage of LPG gas system instead of cylinder gas and PPR piping to ensure better flow of water for energy savings are all the initiatives undertaken to save, conserve and protect the environment.

The event culminated with the launch of the “Say no to plastic straws” of which the PLA (Polylactic Acid) straws, made from corn and potato starch in their multi colors were handed out in the PLA cups, symbolizing the replacement of the plastic straws with these biodegradable, safe for the environment straws. These straws which come in 5 colors, were sponsored by our partners, Target Direction Sdn. Bhd. will be distributed to hotel guests for them to try out. A contest will also be held to encourage guests to drop by the hotel and place their used plastic straws in the box as part of our effort to reach out to our hotel guests and the public at large to join us in this initiative.
