Self-drive tourists and anyone who likes a bit of bump and thump on their “drive” now have a website for their next 4WD adventure on the Atherton Tablelands.

The popular Tablelands Trails website developed by Tablelands Futures Corporation (TFC) now has a 4WD section so people with four-wheel vehicles can get out and about among some of the most spectacular and diverse country in Australia.

There are nine routes to choose from, and they can be linked to make longer trips.

The website includes detailed information on the trails including directions, alerts on road conditions, historic and landscape pointers and tips of how to have an amazing time safely.

The trails take drivers to some epic 4WD country including mountain ranges, old mining towns, hot springs and remote picnic and swimming spots.

Tablelands Futures Corporation chair Michael Lawrence said the burgeoning interest in the Atherton Tablelands as a diverse 4WD destination has prompted the addition to the website.

“The tracks allow people to marvel at the changing landscapes of the Atherton Tablelands from tropical jungle to vast cultivated rolling countryside to rugged ranges to red dirt outback.

“The self-drive tourism market is growing rapidly and 4WD is often the vehicle of choice in Tropical North Queensland. These trails will get visitors out amongst it, seeing country that would enthral and captivate anyone. Plus, it’s a heap of fun.”

Mr Lawrence said many of the trails were linked to the area’s mining past, with the routes being a bit of a treasure hunt for relics from the old tin operations.

The Tablelands Trails website also includes extensive information on cycle trails and mountain bike parks in the area.
