Spread the love

One of Australia’s most sacred sites is found in the Tweed Hinterland not far from Regal Retreats Mistere at Urliup. The World Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park is home to an important cultural landmark, Wollumbin-Mount Warning. The mountain is a place of huge spiritual significance to the Bundjalung people.

Peaking at 1156m, Wollumbin-Mount Warning is the highest point in the region and the first place in Australia to be touched by the sun each morning. There is an undeniable energy and magic emanating from the mountain. And this tends to draw a crowd.

Many visitors to the region are eager to summit Wollumbin-Mount Warning at sunrise. However, given the cultural and spiritual significance of the site, there are only certain people who can climb the mountain under Bundjalung law. Here are our top two ways to appreciate this culturally significant site with respect to the Bundjalung people.

The Lyrebird Track

The Lyrebird Track will take you through the Gondwana Rainforest, across Breakfast Creek and through a palm tree forest to a scenic lookout. Enjoy the diverse ecosystem of the area. Get to know the animals, birds and plants. Remember to bring binoculars for some epic bird watching along the way.

Pinnacle and Blackbutts lookouts

The Pinnacle and Blackbutts lookouts found in the Border Ranges National Park offer an opportunity to experience the sunrise over the Wollumbin-Mount Warning Summit. Watch as the sun dances its way across the region, lighting up the Wollumbin National Park and Tweed Caldera rim in a breathtaking display.
