andBeyond’s latest small group offering in India, the Trans-Himalayan Wildlife Journey, offers an unexpected glimpse of one of the region’s least known destinations. Spending 14 days in remote Ladakh, the itinerary reveals the enchanting beauty and reclusive wildlife of this high-altitude desert, where lofty mountains line the beds of fast-running streams and towering palaces stand sentry over rustic villages.

Known as Little Tibet, Ladakh reveals a softer and more beautiful side in the summer, where little-known wildlife combines with deep tradition and an ancient culture. Buddhist monasteries dot the landscape, fragrant aromas waft out of colourful teahouses and prayer flags flutter in the breeze.

Exploring the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, the journey is privately guided throughout by passionate naturalist Surya Ramachandran. Travellers enjoy the opportunity to track Himalayan brown bear, India’s largest predator, as well as to marvel at other rare high-altitude species that include the Eurasian lynx, Himalayan wolves, ibex, argali wild sheep, golden eagle and black-necked crane. Wildlife sightings occur in the midst of spectacular natural scenery that includes the high-altitude lakes of Tsokar and Tso Moriri.

This isolated region of India has developed a culture completely it’s own and travellers will revel in the opportunity to visit local villages and sites of religious significance. The itinerary allows for time to stroll through the halls of one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in India, as well as to interact with locals at the Shina travel village and Hunderman museumvillage.

Combining elements as diverse as wildlife and geology, this journey through a long-forgotten yet magical outpost of India has something to delight even the most jaded of travellers. The next departure is scheduled for 10 to 23 July at a cost from USD 5 885 per person for the 14-day itinerary.
