Extraordinary Journeys, the award-winning tour operator and adventure travel expert, and African destination specialist, in partnership with expert safari company Great Plains, is offering a remarkable opportunity to travel to Africa this November with Return of the Safari Pioneers.

This luxury, 12-day Kenyan safari during Africa’s Great Migration (departing November 21, 2020 and returning December 4, 2020) has been meticulously designed by a team of African safari experts to jumpstart safe, private, luxury travel back to the African content; new protocols will alleviate the risks of COVID-19 through the implementation of health and safety precautions, including chartered international flights, micro-groups, private accommodations, testing, and the communication of up-to-date information along the way.

Return of the Safari Pioneers is a unique opportunity for travelers to be the first visitors to several of Kenya’s most exclusive locations since the pandemic. Elizabeth Gordon, Co-Founder of Extraordinary Journeys and Condé Nast Traveler 2020 Top Travel Specialist reveals, “The Great Migration is a bucket list item, inside of a bucket list item, for safari guests. People wait for years to get the right booking to view the migration in an exclusive setting void of other tourists. This year, the area is all yours. Travelers will truly be able to have a personal, private, socially-distant safari, all wrapped up in great wine, expertly prepared cuisine, exclusive service, and chartered in-country flights. This truly is a trip-of-a-lifetime during one of the most unique times of our lives.”
This itinerary provides unparalleled access to one of the world’s most iconic safari destinations, including the opportunity to witness the beautiful landscapes and incredible wildlife of the Savanna. From the comfort of a four-person safari vehicle, travelers can watch as zebras and wildebeest compete for the road and keep an eye out for warthogs and gazelle in case lions catch them off guard. Experience the luxurious accommodations of the Ol Donyo Lodge — where elephants are so close that from the safety of the sunken ‘hide’ you can almost touch their toenails; the Mara Plains Camp — where a single tree located miles away marks the landmark of the camp boundary; the Mara Nyika Camp which is set up high on platforms under canvas tents and East African flat-topped Acacia trees; and Arijiju, designed as a Swahili fort with fine interiors from which guests can hear the Borana Conservatory’s lions roaring beyond the edge of camp.
  • The best game drives in the Maasai Mara
  • Stunning views of Mt Kilimanjaro from Ol Donyo
  • Horseback rides at Arijuju and Ol Donyo
  • Treks to explore the Lava Tubes and mountain biking at Ol Donyo
  • Lessons in Maasai and Samburu cultures
  • Access to the best camera equipment for photography at Mara Nyika, Mara plains, and Ol Donyo
Traveling to Kenya currently requires guests to have a COVID-19 negative test result from less than 72 hours prior to departure. Upon arrival in Africa, guests will receive a second screening. Extraordinary Journeys will continue to monitor the situation for updates and changes.
  • International Private Charter: Extraordinary Journeys and Great Plains, in partnership with Kenya Airways, have booked a 30-seat Boeing 787 charter to fly guests from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Guests will receive an exclusive, private check-in at JFK and, upon arrival in Kenya, will pass through customs via Kenya Airways’ first-class lounge, ensuring minimal contact and maximum comfort.
  • Private Inter-Camp Air Transfers
  • Adjusted Safari Vehicles: Guests will travel in safari vehicles that have had their seats adjusted to carry only four pioneers at a time.
  • Private Accommodations: Each camp has been redesigned to host only ten guests, and each room or tent will be thoroughly cleaned and aired out using medical-grade disinfectants prior to arrival.

Roundtrip flight from JFK on Kenya Airways departs November 21, 2020 and returns December 4, 2020. Rates for this itinerary start at $43,000 per person for 15 days / 14 nights (12 nights in Kenya).
