Indigenous tour operator Lirrwi Tourism has announced a one-off short-term discount of 25 per cent on its  Gay’Wu or Dilly Bag Tours for Women in East Arnhem Land.  The offer applies to the last tour for the season, departing on Friday September 6, 2019.

The Gay’Wu or dilly bag is a powerful cultural symbol in Arnhem Land, where it was created by local Indigenous Yolngu women thousands of years ago using woven pandanus leaves. The dilly bag has both a practical and a spiritual meaning, as it is used to hold bush foods and medicines and is also used to carry knowledge.

The five-day Gay’Wu tour is for women and girls only. Space is available on the final tour for the 2019 season, with the special discount available for new bookings on the September 6 departure only. For bookings, please use the special code, Promo Code 25OFF when booking online or over the phone.

The Yolngu often say the land is their mother, as it nurtures, heals and guides their lives. The Gay’Wu tour offers women the chance to come together with their Yolngu sisters and learn about their culture, history and country. Equally it is an opportunity to take time out and reconnect with every aspect of one’s own life.

A range of activities may be included, from a ‘Welcome to Country’, healing and crying (Nathi) ceremonies to learning about Yolngu kinship, lore and language, weaving, gathering of bush foods and medicine, dancing and storytelling. Unplanned events are always a possibility and make Lirrwi’s tours so special; perhaps a stopover at the beach to catch mud crabs or oysters, bush painting or a lesson in astrology under a blanket of stars.

The tour includes a visit to Buku Larngguy, the remarkable art centre in Yirrkala, home to beautiful bark artworks, Larrakitj (ceremonial poles), weavings and jewellery. Buku Larngguy also has an extraordinary collection of historical material and is regarded as one of the best Aboriginal Art centres in Australia.

Rates on the discounted Women’s Tour are $1799* per person twin share – discounted from the full rate of $2399 – and include accommodation, meals, transfers and tours.
