Over the weekend on the ABC, Adventure World Travel were excited to take a wild adventure through Borneo – following in the footsteps of Britain’s national treasure, Dame Judi Dench. The fascinating series Wild Borneo Adventure explores the rare and unique wildlife found in Borneo’s jungles and rainforests and visits some of the many conservation areas and centres which play an important part in preserving pristine wilderness areas and wildlife habitats.

Episode one saw Judi discover the Danum Valley Conservation area, with an incredible diversity of wildlife, this rainforest reserve is regarded as one of the most important in the region. With many species of hornbills plus opportunities to see the very rare and vulnerable Clouded Leopard, this area of old growth forest is one of the great surviving refuges for many animal species. Travellers can experience the biodiversity of Danum Valley for themselves on Adventure World Travel’s 3-day Danum Valley Rainforest itinerary.

For a deeper dive into Borneo, guests should consider the 10-day Borneo Wildlife Highlights itinerary. Follow in the steps of Judi and witness the excellent rehabilitation work being done at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Established in 1964 to rehabilitate captured, injured or abandoned apes, the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is an important centre which has played a vital role in returning more than 75% of orangutans who have been brought here to the jungle.

Cruise along the Kinabatangan River, probably the most accessible area in Borneo where a wide range of wildlife can be sighted. Visitors can explore the rainforest by boat and spot wildlife along the riverbanks, looking out for orangutan, Pygmy elephants, Proboscis monkeys and hornbills.

Travel onwards to Oxbow lakes to spot wild proboscis monkeys and walk through the lush primary rainforests of the Danum Valley, in search of the conservation area’s rich wildlife. Along the way, stop in a homestay in the shadow of Mount Kinabalu, sample a natural fish spa and stay in a working scientific research centre.

Neil Rodgers, Adventure World Travel Managing Director commented: “Since the airing of Wild Borneo Adventure with Dame Judi Dench, we’ve had an influx of enquiries from travellers looking to recreate her Borneo experience. Borneo is a destination rich in an incredible array of wildlife and unique history and is a fantastic holiday option for those looking to experience pristine wilderness.”
