German Smurfs and Aussie cheese-eaters smash records

Thousands of Germans with blue faces and wigs have set a new Guinness World Record, while on the other side of the world 1000 dedicated cheese tasters have done the same in picturesque Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales.

The small German town of Lauchringen, near the Swiss border, turned blue in a bid to break the world record for the largest meeting of Smurfs.

Over 2760 revellers turned out wearing costumes from the famous Belgian cartoon. Participants dressed as characters including Papa Smurf and Smurfette, dancing and singing the Smurf theme song. They beat the previous record of 2510 Smurfs, set in Wales in 2009.

The appeal of the Smurfs – Die Schlümpfe as they are known in Germany – refuses to die.

MEANWHILE, 1000 cheese tasters turned out in Kangaroo Valley to set a new record for mass cheese tasting. Punters were willing to line up and wait an hour to taste three pieces of cheese and enter the history books, the South Coast Register reported.

Three dairies donated more than 36kg of cheese and over 50 local volunteers sliced and boxed cheese for eight hours and acted as marshals and counters.

Demand for free boxes of cheese ran so high that 1500 people lined up.

Both the German Smurfs and the Kangaroo Valley Cheesemakers (who haven’t met, as far as is known) have each lodged official documentation with Guinness World Records, including drone footage, photographs and witness statements. They are awaiting final verification and approval.
