Golden Sands Resort By Shangri-La Is Endorsed As One Of The Most Eco-Friendly Resorts In Malaysia

Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La has been endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) as one of the best eco-friendly resorts in Malaysia.

The endorsement serves as a recognition of the resort’s continued commitment and effort in working towards a sustainable future and responsible tourism that benefits its guests, employees and the community.

MOTAC Penang Director Tuan Freddie Jonathan presented the certificate to Elaine Yue, general manager of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang and Golden Sands Resort, Penang, recently.

Tuan Jonathan commended the resort for its water-bottling plant, recycling centre and waste-management programme that significantly reduces usage of disposable plastic and discarded packaging materials, which eventually end up chocking rubbish landfills.

He is happy to see that the resort’s corporate social responsibility committee is actively conducting activities and oversees, regulates and disseminates relevant information on environment conservation and sustainability. CSR meetings, led by the CSR manager and staff members, are held monthly to spread awareness and encourage CSR participation across the hotel ranks.

“Golden Sands Resort is truly honoured by this recognition from MOTAC,” said Ms Yue. “Our company continues to develop and apply all the environmental best practices daily as an ongoing effort in conserving the environment. The Green Hotel certification and endorsement spurs us to do more and remain at the forefront of sustainable operations in our industry while continuing to further reduce our impact on the environment.”

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts remains committed to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner whilst balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. In striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, a corporate-level CSR Committee drives the company’s initiatives in the strategic areas of stakeholder relations, environment, health and safety, supply chain and employees. These focus areas are unified under the umbrella brand of “Sustainability”, together with Shangri-La’s core CSR projects “Embrace” and “Sanctuary”. Hotel-level Embrace programmes focus on Shangri-La’s Caring People Project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support in underprivileged communities. Sanctuary programmes concentrate on Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
