Helloworld Travel has appointed John Constable, former global head of STA, as its new group general manager – retail and commercial.

Constable, who has also held senior positions with Tui and other major UK travel retail and wholesale businesses, will take up the Melbourne-based position next Monday, 12 February 2018.

Julie Primmer, head of branded network; David Padman, head of corporate, associate and affiliate networks; Mike Thompson, group general manager partnerships; and Stan Scott, head of commercial, will all report into Constable.

“I am delighted that John has agreed to join Helloworld Travel Limited,” Helloworld Travel chief executive Andrew Burnes said.

“John brings with him a wealth of experience in the wholesale and retail global travel distribution business and I am confident he will have a very positive impact on our retail businesses, including our commercial operations.”

The new appointment now establishes the four pillars of Helloworld Travel’s operational management team, with Constable heading up the retail and commercial divisions in Australia, Cinzia Burnes heading up the wholesale and inbound divisions, Russell Carstensen heading up the corporate and air tickets businesses and Simon McKearney heading up Helloworld’s extensive operations in New Zealand.

Constable will report to Burnes.

MEANWHILE, on another front, Helloworld’s travel management operation QBT has entered into a joint venture with In Travel Group, launching a new business entity called Inspire Travel Management.

This is a first-in-market enterprise forming a majority Indigenous owned Travel Management Company (TMC) in Australia. In Travel Group (ITG) is an established boutique corporate TMC under the management of executive director and founder Dwayne Good. Its team has over 30 years’ experience in the travel industry working across areas including entertainment, mining, resources, sports, music, arts, conferences, events and not for profit organisations.

Burnes commented on the significance of this business partnership.

“We are proud to be collaborating on the creation and launch of Inspire Travel Management, providing opportunity for our business to demonstrate best practice in the industry in the areas of Indigenous employment and procurement outcomes.

“QBT and Helloworld Travel Limited are fully committed to this venture to not only deliver on our prioritised social impact and corporate responsibility targets, but it will also contribute significantly to the travel industry and in turn to the Australian economy” Burnes said.

Dwayne Good, founder of In Travel Group echoed the sentiment, sharing his views on the importance of the partnership that has been months of discussion and collaboration between himself and Helloworld Travel’s Russell Carstensen.

“Looking at the travel landscape we found that QBT and Helloworld Travel were the clear leaders and best fit for this important venture. Their support of this initiative has been evident from the very start of our discussions and we are all clearly committed to successful shared outcomes.

“Having worked in the travel industry for over ten years I can see Indigenous Australians are underrepresented and I am excited and passionate to be working to address that. This collaboration goes further than the obvious long-term employment opportunities for Indigenous people, and will work towards creating Indigenous travel professionals, experts in this industry that currently has very little Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander representation. I am genuinely excited to be embarking on this process.”
