Join us, along with National Geographic photographer Jad Davenport as we spend a week at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge in the wilds of northern Manitoba, where the Boreal forest meets Hudson Bay and polar bears cohabitate with wolves.
After photographing wolves in Yellowstone, Denali and the Yukon, and then spending extensive time at Nanuk Lodge over the last few years, Jad has stated that the wolf viewing and photography at this property is the best in the world.
The subspecies of grey wolves found along this coastline, Canis lupus nubilus, are some of the largest in the world, and some of the least studied. Enter, citizen science!
Guests will have the opportunity to help us pioneer field studies on these wolves, answering questions such as: How many wolves inhabit the area? What influences their population? How many packs are there? Territories? What is their impact on the moose population? What is the relationship between wolves and polar bears? We’re also looking at possible DNA collection through scat and hair snares, track casting and audio studies.
As the only operator in the area, we’ve been able to control all interactions with these wolves. Our ethical and non-invasive approach to wildlife tourism means we’ve not given wolves any reason to fear humans. This allows us to get relatively close to the wolves without spooking them, leading to high-quality encounters and observations.
Daily excursions on foot, by snowmobile, or in our custom, low-impact open-air ATVs will provide opportunities to observe, photograph and document the wolves and other wildlife in the area. Evening presentations by guides will provide a deeper understanding of this captivating stretch of coastline and its wild inhabitants.
This trip will take place in November 2021 at our Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, the only place in the world where polar bears and wolves cohabitate.
Located 250 km southeast of Churchill, Manitoba, next to the pristine Arctic waters of Hudson Bay, sits Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, one of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. The convergence of taiga and coastal ecosystems surrounding this cozy wilderness lodge are home to Canadian icons such as polar bears, black bears, wolves, and moose.
Nanuk’s location directly beneath the auroral oval also provides excellent opportunities for witnessing nature’s greatest light show, the aurora borealis.
From the safety of the fence surrounding the Lodge, view the northern lights or get up-close-and-personal with the polar bears and other wildlife that meander past, as curious about you as you are about them.
Nanuk’s eight guestrooms with en-suite bathrooms are housed in two guest wings connected to the main dining room/lounge area, each with a private sitting area that overlooks the Bay.
After a long day trekking the tundra, kick back in front of our lounge’s fireplace and enjoy an informative presentation by our guides, or simply relax and enjoy conversations with new friends.
