A strange case involving two tourists visiting Sydney from different parts of the world emerged this week when police charged a man over an incident in which a female traveller discovered a camera hidden in a bathroom they shared in a Bondi Beach hostel.

A 27-year-old woman, holidaying from France, booked into a hostel on Bondi’s well-known Lamrock Avenue on Sunday, not far from Bondi Beach. She was allocated a room with en-suite bathroom, shared with a man unknown to her, NSW Police advised.

About 10pm on Monday, the woman had finished showering when she noticed a toiletry bag on the sink, with what appeared to be a small camera hidden within a deodorant stick.

She took photos of the device then contacted officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command.

Police attended the scene and arrested a 36-year-old man, who was on holiday in Australia from Hong Kong.

Police will allege the remnants of a smashed camera were found when the man was searched.

A search of the man’s property revealed numerous hard drives and storage devices which police will allege contained further videos of women in private acts.

The man has now been charged with what NSW Police term “install device, adapt building etc to observe or film other, and possess surveillance devices intend unlawful use”.

The Hong Kong man was refused bail and was due to appear in Waverley Local Court yesterday.
