With the question, how low can air fares go resonating in my mind and that of many other aviation analysist, Virgin Australia has launched a massive national what appears to be an air fare “fire sale”, with one-way Business Class fares from as low as $279 and one-way Economy fares from $67, yes I said $67, across 52 domestic destinations

Virgin Australia says that the sale which ends at midnight Monday 29 March or until sold-out, coincides with the launch of their new Business Class menu on  Thursday 25 March, with the sale fares available for select travel dates and destinations from 21 April 2021 to 15 December 2021 and amazingly also in addition to the Federal Government’s announcement of 800,000 half-price fares on sale 1 April, plus all the fares include baggage, seat selection and Velocity Frequent Flyer points and status credits…and Virgin Australia continues to offer free booking flexibility for travel until 31 January 2022.

A Virgin Australia “spokesperson” said that Virgin Australia is committed to offering Australians irresistible airfares and this sale is an example of how they are trying to help support the tourism economy, adding the airline is excited about the future of travel in Australia and so are Australians, with following the separate announcement of 800,000 half price fares by the Federal Government on the 11 March and Virgin Australia’s subsequent Friday flash sale, flight searches on virginaustralia.com increased 523%, whilst bookings jumped almost 157% for the day, making it the highest search volume day, and highest booking day since pre-COVID.

Sale fares include:

On-sale one-way Business Class routes:

  • Melbourne – Sydney from $279
  • Gold Coast – Sydney from $279
  • Adelaide – Melbourne from $279

So, I suppose, the only thing to wait for now is how QANTAS will respond answering my question, “How low can air fares go”?
