HSBC today announced that since it launched in 2017, the HSBC Try Rugby programme has introduced over 30,000 children to the sport of rugby in Hong Kong, paving the way for other HSBC grassroots initiatives around the world. Designed in partnership with the Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU) and The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the community programme looked to introduce rugby sevens into the school curriculum, creating a fun and exciting teacher coaching programme to help spread the knowledge and skills nurtured in the game of rugby at primary schools.

Kevin Martin, Regional Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management ASP for HSBC was joined today by Pieter Schats, Chairman of the Hong Kong Rugby Union; Robbie McRobbie, CEO of the Hong Kong Rugby Union; Dr. Ada Ma, Head of Department of Health and Physical Education, of the Education University of Hong Kong; Kevin Kam, Associate Head of Department of Health and Physical Education of the Education University of Hong Kong; Zoe Lee, Associate CEO of Food Angel and Emma Leung, Manager of Donations of Food Angel to announce the impact the HSBC Try Rugby Programme has had since 2017.

—  Over 30,000 children have been introduced to the sport

—  Over 469 teachers in Hong Kong have participated in the HSBC Try Rugby Programme

—  Over 145 Physical Education undergraduate students from the Education University of Hong Kong have taken the course

—  Over 250 schools in Hong Kong have participated in the HSBC Try Rugby Programme

The HSBC Try Rugby programme is just one of the community initiatives HSBC supports as part of their partnership with the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. The Hong Kong community has been an integral part of the success of the tournament and HSBC look to celebrate that role with the HSBC Sevens Village and bespoke activities at both Hysan Place and the Harbourfront.

Speaking at the announcement, Kevin Martin, Regional Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management ASP for HSBC said, “As we enter one of the most exciting weeks in the Hong Kong sporting calendar, it fills me with pride to be able to share the positive impact the HSBC Try Rugby Programme has had introducing rugby to school children in Hong Kong, and the support it lends for the sustainable development of rugby in the Hong Kong community. Initiatives such as these are integral to the long term success of the sport. Kevin Martin announced at the events that this year HSBC will be taking even greater steps than ever before to make the HSBC Sevens Village as sustainable as possible, matching the brands commitment to sustainability in everything it does.

The announcement comes as Food Angel confirm their ongoing partnership with HSBC to move towards an increasingly sustainable Sevens with increased food recycling in the stadium and in the HSBC Sevens Village. Later this month, they will open their first Food Angel kitchen meaning more members of the community can benefit from their work.
