Hurtigruten dedicates cabins to $250,000 bushfire appeal

In response to the devastating Australian bushfires, expedition cruise line Hurtigruten has taken a novel approach, directing proceeds of designated cabin bookings to a Bushfire Appeal to assist with the recovery of habitat, wildlife and communities affected by the fires.

Travel agents wishing to book a Hurtigruten Bushfire Appeal cabin on behalf of their clients should contact a Hurtigruten Expedition Specialist on 1300 322 062.

“The impact of these bushfires is unprecedented. It is heartbreaking to witness the loss of life, as well as the devastation of habitat and wildlife on such a scale. We believe it is important that we all take part in the global and local effort to support Australia’s recovery,” said Damian Perry, managing director Hurtigruten Asia-Pacific.

Funds raised for the appeal will come from the sale of designated “Bushfire Appeal” cabins on Hurtigruten expedition cruises with 100% of the proceeds to be distributed by the Hurtigruten Foundation.

The Hurtigruten Foundation supports conservation, environmental and community projects in the areas where Hurtigruten operates, but the extent of the impact of the fires in Australia and Hurtigruten’s wish to assist with the recovery has prompted the establishment of the Hurtigruten Bushfire Appeal.

The appeal will include more than 40 cabins ranging from standard to suite, with a combined value of more than AUD 250,000. Guests and agents purchasing Bushfire Appeal cabins will also be able to take advantage of any current offers or discounts.

Funds raised for the Hurtigruten Bushfire Appeal will support environmental projects, animal rescue and sustainability initiatives and provide direct grants to relevant local agencies.

“Hurtigruten acknowledges there is a direct correlation between the extremes of these fires and the impact of climate change on the environment,” Perry said.

Guests planning to travel with Hurtigruten can choose to purchase a “Bushfire Appeal” cabin on their Hurtigruten expedition cruise or Norwegian Original Coastal Voyage, knowing that 100% of the proceeds of their cabin purchase will support bushfire recovery.

The Hurtigruten Bushfire Appeal commences 22 January with selected cabins available on a range of voyages.

The Hurtigruten Foundation was established in 2015 to support projects relating to three key pillars: conserving the world’s polar bear population, fighting marine and plastic pollution, and running local and global projects in the areas Hurtigruten explores.
