HOBART’S ‘IN THE HANGING GARDEN’ REOPENS FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER

  • Reopens Friday 1 November;
  • ‘Good Fridays’ summer event series begins;
  • New central Cathedral lawns (dog-friendly);
  • New kitchen operators; La Sardina Loca and Oryza;
  • Ongoing music programming at Altar, Odeon Theatre, and Cathedral lawns.

DarkLab today announced the reopening of In The Hanging Garden, central Hobart’s revitalised cultural space where people can gather to break bread, drink, and dance.

After burning all too brightly during Dark Mofo, the garden’s been blooming behind closed doors, and now’s the time for a resurrection.

GOOD FRIDAYS

In The Hanging Garden reopens this weekend, throwing open the gates with a new series of events called Good Fridays—weekly Friday night garden gatherings with all manner of food, and a diverse roster of DJs to party our way into the summer evenings.

Plus there’ll be live music and libation specials aplenty–including giving away 1,000 free spritzes from 6–7pm during opening night’s ‘Holy Hour’, and celebratings spreading to the new dog-friendly lawns under our 18-metre-tall central Cathedral structure, lit in worship of the weekend to come.

Also on-site is Altar, DarkLab’s 400-capacity temple of live music with multi-band programming followed by weekend nightclub beats taking revelers through to the witching hour. Upcoming highlights include Drab Majesty (USA), Greenleaf (SWE), Obituary (USA), Fleshgod Apocalypse (ITA), Richie Ramone (USA), British India, Ali Barter, Hard-Ons, Horrorshow, and more.

On the other side of the precinct, Hobart’s historic 1200-capacity Odeon Theatre also features a growing roster of gigs with international artists. Upcoming highlights include three shows by Amy Shark, plus Nils Frahm (DEU), The Cat Empire (sold out), Weyes Blood (USA), Violent Femmes, City and Colour (CAN), Breathe: The Sound of Pink Floyd, and more.

NEW KITCHEN OPERATORS

The renewed precinct offers new dining options, new bars with specially-designed cocktails, ‘Holy Hour’ drink specials, and different cultural flavour options offering both small plates to be eaten while walking, standing or perched near the stall where it was prepared, as well as larger serves to sit down and enjoy with friends.

Oryza is a new venture by the former owners of MYU Easy Bites, Ian Chan and Leng Chung’s Malaysian hole-in-the-wall restaurant in New Town that quickly established a cult following.

Oryza will be serving up small bites including fried chicken wings with spicy cheese sauce; lamb dumplings with smoked eggplant sauce; crispy pork summer rolls, with fermented nuoc cham (dipping sauce).

Larger plates will include chicken or vegan Karahi Kathi roll (an Indian-style kebab) with chatpata (spicy potato) salad; vegan Dan Dan hand-made noodles, Sichuan pepper pickled cucumber and red cabbage; and a fried chicken rice bowl with spicy cucumber and radish pickles.

La Sardina Loca is another new venture that made its debut at Dark Mofo’s Winter Feast this year, a delicious Basque-country inspired pintxos bar delivered by Kif Weber and Josh Carver of Suzie Luck’s (formerly Smolt at Salamanca).

They’ll be enticing diners with small Spanish snacks: pickled Bass Strait sardine on tostada with aioli and salt bush; Padron peppers, grilled chorizo and spicy tomato; Ortiz anchovy, Ibarra chilli and sourdough; or confit sweet potato, jamón serrano and pickled radish.

Larger dishes will include: Pedro Ximénez sherry-braised beef cheek with charred onion, kale, sunflower seeds, or simple sides: charred sweet corn, roasted garlic and chilli butter; potatoes bravas with crunchy pinkeyes, Ajoblanco (chilled soup) and pickles. Drinks will include a house spritz, highball & sodas, Two Cities Brewing beer, and specialty wine.

In The Hanging Garden is a project of DarkLab and Riverlee with Fender Katsalidis Architects.
