Located 600 kilometres north of Brisbane and 30 kilometres from Rockhampton, our smiles are spread as wide as the ocean as we celebrate bright cheerful days with beachside barbies, melted ice-cream and dreams of epic adventures. The new season brings a fresh chance to introduce your family to the wonders of the Capricorn Coast, and our bucket list is sprinkled with amazing places to explore with your tots, tweens and in-betweens.

Infused with an abundance of kid-friendly activities, as well as a bevy of grown-up attractions too, we’ve whipped up a list our top six favourite activities that you must check out on the Capricorn Coast for your next family holiday.

Yeppoon Lagoon

Woo’ing with spectacular ocean views, this thrilling, chilling, water-spilling adventure playground includes a shallow children’s play area, an informal lap swimming area and a swim-up infinity edge overlooking the Keppel Islands. If you dream of tempering any signs of stress by a pool while the kids swim from dusk until dawn, the Yeppoon Lagoon is not to be missed.

Underwater discoveries

Dive into the region’s best snorkelling as you experience our magical Southern Great Barrier Reef. With loads of protected bays that provide safe swimming all year round, you can create your own snorkel adventure, or join a thrilling guided tour with Keppel Explorer to show you some of the hottest places to spy colourful coral, curious turtles, inquisitive sharks and loads of other amazing underwater life.

The Keppel Islands, including Great Keppel Island and Pumpkin Island offer stellar basecamps to begin your snorkelling journey. Stay for a night or longer at Great Keppel Island Hideaway, Great Keppel Island Holiday Village or book your own private slice of paradise at Pumpkin Island. All snorkelling equipment is available for hire at Great Keppel Island Watersports and Activities. Keppel Dive also operates from Great Keppel Island, so grab your scuba equipment and dive in!

Not keen to get your feet wet? Freedom Fast Cats’ glass-bottom boat tour is a quiet, relaxed alternative for those wishing to view the wonders of the reef and spectacular marine life from above the water. This cruise includes a glass bottom boat coral viewing tour, along with insight into the history of Great Keppel Island.

Animal encounters

Ready for some animal adventure?

Get up close and personal with approximately 4000 crocodiles at Koorana Crocodile Farm. From March to May, crocodiles hatchlings embark on the world and entrance prices include the opportunity to touch and hold a specially trained crocodile. Koorana Crocodile Farm is a commercially operated crocodile farm and croc restaurant located half an hour drive from Rockhampton or Yeppoon.

At Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary, you can cuddle a Koala, hold a Crocodile, Snake or Lizard, play with Birds, interact with playful Monkeys and hand feed Kangaroos! There is a swimming pool, paddling pool and barbecue facilities which are all included with admission.

Holiday Parks

Imagine a place where happiness can be found peeking through the palm trees at Discovery Parks – Coolwaters, or where a lush, green oasis meets fun overload at NRMA Capricorn Yeppoon Holiday Park. Perhaps you are chasing a place offering extensive family friendly facilities, kids activities, and a relaxed atmosphere at Kinka Beach Island View Caravan Park. Dust off your worries and let go of the routine of daily life as you experience three of the Capricorn Coasts best holiday parks!

Let the fun begin with a massive water park, BMX track, jumping pillow and resort style pool. Create sensational memories in the children’s playground, or pop the popcorn, grab your loved ones and settle into an on-screen adventure at the open-air theatre. Bring the caravan or book a cabin. With fantastic facilities, including barbeque areas and camp kitchens, make sure you schedule plenty of time to play!

Snagging a catch

Pumping yabbies and casting a rod and reel is a whole lot of fun on the Capricorn Coast because we know there are plenty of fish in the sea! With loads of hotspots right across the Coast, we know that youngsters will soon get hooked. Whether you want to keep your feet on the mainland or kiss a fish on board one of our fabulous fishing charters such as Rise Environmental and Guiding Services, Keppeluna, Double Threat Charters Yeppoon, Guided Fishing Down Under or Reel Fishing CQ, we are sure you will bag a decent catch.

Keppel Kraken

Taking pride of place on the Yeppoon Foreshore, the Keppel Kraken is a water play feature quite unlike any other. With a mythical sea creature centrepiece and set against the spectacular backdrop of Keppel Bay, Yeppoon’s newest tourist attraction is the perfect place to soak up some sunshine on the beautiful Capricorn Coast. Featuring a host of interactive elements including water cannons, jets and a unique umbrella bucket – the only one of its kind in Queensland – the Keppel Kraken is guaranteed fun for the whole family.

Dilute screen time for family time and get into the great outdoors on an action-packed getaway. Whichever adventure you choose, rest assured little ones won’t be wishing they were folded on the couch this holiday.

From sun-drenched beaches, extraordinary country, to buzzing markets, cafes and shopping, the Capricorn Coast offers its own unique history, culture and landscape. At the end of your day, there are endless options to bunker down with loads of family friendly hotels, resorts and campgrounds. Whisk the kids away and head to the Capricorn Coast – where fun and adventure is ready and waiting for your family.
