Intrepid Travel has launched five new trips in the cycling and hiking range in Australia and New Zealand.

The trips are as diverse as cycling the Victorian Alps, to hiking the Larapinta Trail or seeing Cradle Mountain on foot.

“We have listened to what our travellers want, which is more options to challenge themselves in nature and to take slower, more immersive trips closer to home,” Intrepid Travel MD APAC Sarah Clark said.

“Human powered travel is the antidote to being in lockdown for months, whether by hiking epic trails or cycling iconic terrain,” Clark said.

Cradle Mountain Overland Trek: Australia’s most famous trek is Tasmania’s Overland track. There will be two expert mountain guides at your side as you make your way through temperate rainforest and eucalyptus groves, across alpine moors and through valleys, skirt the edges of bright blue lakes and take in views of waterfalls and towering peaks in the distance. Camp under star-filled skies, wake up to dramatic landscapes, and take the chance to tackle side trips like summiting Cradle Mountain and the island’s highest peak Mt Ossa. The 6 day trip is priced from $2,125 per person.

Larapinta Trek: It’s one of the world’s best desert treks and also in the heart of the Australian Outback. The Larapinta trek is in the West MacDonnell National Park of the Northern Territory. Hike along the red rock slopes of the West Macs and enjoy the time to truly connect to Country and appreciate the importance of this place to the local people over thousands of years. Hike to shadowed gorges, snaking riverbanks, open plains and towering mountains filled with a rich diversity of animals and plants, taking in sights like Ormiston Gorge and a rewarding ascent of Mt Sonder. The 5 day trip is priced from $2,350 per person.

Cycle the Victorian High Country: Switch the Swiss Alps for the Victorian Alps for an active cycle adventure. You will be overlooked by Mount Buffalo as you cycle through wine country, local Aussie pubs, small gold mining towns and dramatic scenery. You will be overlooked by Mount Buffalo as you cycle the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The trip is paced to be enjoyable rather than exerting, so is open to all types of cyclists. The 4 day trip is priced from $1,049 per person.

Cycle New Zealand: Otago Rail Trail: New Zealand is renowned for its great cycling conditions and the Otago Rail Trail makes the most of it. Starting in Queenstown, the Trail then passed through small gold-mining towns like Alexandra, Omakau, Wedderburn and Hyde. There are flat plains overlooked by steep mountains as well as rivers and vineyards all along the route. The 4 day trip is priced from $1,040 per person.

New Zealand Retreat: Lake Wanaka: This three-day Intrepid Retreat experience in Wanaka has a local host to look after you and introduce you to this cinematic location. There are the heritage streets of gold rush town Arrowtown, as well as local distilleries and wineries. On the active side, there is a hike up Mt Iron and a cycle along the Otago Rail Trail. The 3 day trip is priced from $1,112 per person.

All the trips will operate under Intrepid’s new Safe Travels health protocols, developed in partnership with the WTTC. All travelers will complete a health screening at the start of the trip and the group will be accompanied by a local leader who has received specific COVID-19 training, which covers hygiene, sanitation, physical distancing, PPE as well as supplier monitoring.

Intrepid has recently introduced a new Flexible Bookings policy to make travelers feel at ease when booking their holidays, which permits changes to travel plans 21 days before a scheduled departure, allowing for new travel dates or an entirely different trip with no change fees.
