Las Vegas vs Macau — Which One Is the Top Gambling Travel Destination?

April 20, 2019 Visit USA No Comments Email Email

Las Vegas has been regarded as the top destination in the world for gambling enthusiasts for decades. However, Macau is threatening to take that position away from the Sin City. The two cities have a lot of similarities, but they also have some crucial differences.

They are located in different parts of the world and focus on different demographics. Moreover, geographically, these two travel destinations are vastly different.

So the question is — will Macau surpass Las Vegas in the number of visitors and the revenue from tourism in the near future?

Let’s analyze this issue further by comparing the two destinations and what they have to offer with the help of a handy infographic created by the team behind

Basic Information
Las Vegas seems to have a clear advantage when it comes to how many travelers it can accommodate, considering that its surface area is three times larger than that of Macau.

However, that does not mean a lot since the population of these two cities is pretty much the same. Las Vegas has a population of 640,000, while Macau is inhabited by 612,000 people.

But when it comes to the annual visitor volume, according to Casino Sites, Las Vegas is still in the lead. The American gambling hub is visited by 43 million people every year, which is still a lot more than Macau’s 30 million. However, there are strong indications that this will change.

Who Are The Visitors?
Even though Las Vegas and Macau compete for the label of the number one gambling travel destination, it is highly unlikely that they will ever have an impact on each other. This is due to a simple fact — their demographics are vastly different because they are located on different continents.

Macau is the most popular travel destination for gaming enthusiasts in China and the rest of Asia. At least two-thirds of all tourists in Macau come from China; the rest is from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

On the other hand, half of all visitors in Las Vegas come from the Western United States. Therefore, domestic tourism is strong in both countries. The other 50% come from foreign countries, mainly rich Western European countries.

The Number of Casinos and Hotels
We’ve already established that Las Vegas has more annual visitors than Macau. But what is their motivation for coming? Las Vegas is the favorite destination for people who want to party and spend the majority of their times in casinos. Therefore, Las Vegas is home to 104 casinos, 68 hotels, 31 motels, and around 17,000 guest rooms.

Macau is focusing more on providing an all-around experience for the whole family. This is reflected in the fact that it houses just 49 casinos, but has 75 hotels and 30,000 guest rooms. Therefore, it seems to be better prepared for accommodating whole families and keeping everyone entertained.
