LATAM Airlines Group’s 25th Boeing 787 took off for the first time from Santiago International Airport on 21 November at 09:15AM local time for flight LA750 to São Paulo, Brazil. The group received the new aircraft last week at Boeing’s Delivery Centre in Charleston, South Carolina, United States.

This is the first Boeing 787 to feature LATAM’s new cabin standard. The aircraft will operate from Chile to medium and long-haul destinations, including Sydney, New York, São Paulo, Tel Aviv and Madrid.

The arrival of the new Boeing 787-9 – one of the world’s most modern and efficient aircraft – is part of more than a US$500 million investment to transform LATAM’s travel experience, which includes the renovation of around 200 aircraft, representing over half of the group’s global fleet.

LATAM’s new Boeing 787-9 has capacity for 303 passengers: 30 in Premium Business class, offering direct aisle access; 219 seats in a renovated Economy cabin and 54 LATAM+ Seats that offer greater space, a dedicated overhead bin and premium services such as priority boarding.

María Fernández de Córdoba, LATAM Airlines Group’s Director of Customer Experience, said: “We are pleased to welcome this new member of the LATAM family, which will transport thousands of passengers from our Santiago hub to international destinations throughout our network, offering a leading travel experience and the highest standards of comfort as well as a reduced carbon footprint.”

“LATAM has successfully grown its operations by continually setting a new level of excellence in the passenger flying experience. We are honoured to deliver the group’s 25th 787 that combines LATAM’s new cabin experience and the airplane’s cutting-edge innovation to bring unmatched comfort to its customers. With this delivery, LATAM will further expand the largest 787 Dreamliner fleet in Latin America to serve its passengers and achieve unparalleled fuel efficiency in its operations that translates into lower operating costs and better environmental performance,” said Ricardo Cavero, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The efficiencies of LATAM’s Boeing 787 fleet
LATAM was the first airline group in the Americas to operate the Boeing 787-8 in August 2012, and has since incorporated 25 Boeing 787 family aircraft into its fleet. With its cutting-edge design, the Boeing 787 consumes up to 20% less fuel than similar aircraft, with up to 20% fewer CO2 emissions.

As one of the three most sustainable airline groups in the world*, LATAM’s Boeing 787 fleet plays an important part in its environmental strategy. Since it began 787 operations in 2012, LATAM has avoided a total of 675,679 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 6,272 flights between Santiago and New York.

A new travel experience
LATAM Airlines Group’s first Boeing 787 to feature its new cabins represents the new standard for its long-haul fleet and is one of nearly 200 aircraft to offer this new travel experience over the next two years. To date, LATAM has transformed the interiors of approximately 30 aircraft, which are already receiving positive feedback from passengers.

In the new Premium Business cabin, each custom-designed Thompson seat offers more privacy and direct aisle access, as well as configurations for both individuals and couples. The seats recline 180o into a fully-flat bed, feature the latest generation in-flight entertainment with an 18” Panasonic personal screen and have ample space for personal items.

The Economy cabin features ergonomically designed Recaro seats, offering greater comfort as well as fast-charging USB ports, 12” individual seat-back screens and a state-of-the-art inflight entertainment system. LATAM+ Seats offer greater space, a dedicated overhead bin and premium services such as priority boarding.

The Boeing 787 also offers more comfort and space than equivalent aircraft with features that include:

  • 40% larger windows with electronic auto-dimming windows.
  • Overhead bins with 30% more storage space.
  • Greater humidity and lower altitude cabin pressure to reduce fatigue, dryness and other symptoms passengers might experience when flying.
  • Reduced noise both inside and outside the cabin.
  • Dynamic LED lighting.
