A 25-year-old man is said to have touched the faces of airline passengers and sprayed them with an unknown substance from a bottle before leaping over three metres out of the plane onto the tarmac when it touched down.

The incident occurred on American Airlines flight 1346 on Friday, after it landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Las Vegas.

According to a local police media release cited by CNN, the weird behaviour began as the flight from Minneapolis was coming in to land.

A man who “had been acting strange on the flight” went on to prowl the cabin and randomly touch the faces of other passengers. He then sprayed an unknown substance from a spray bottle on them, police said.

The man was brought to the front of the plane to get off before the other passengers, CNN said, but while waiting for the main door of the plane to open, the man suddenly opened a service door on the other side of the plane and leapt out.

Mystery spray

Airport security personnel soon caught up with him, took him into custody without incident and conveyed him to a local hospital, police said.

Police added that none of the passengers wished to press charges, although the prosecutor’s office has prepared trespassing charges against the mysterious traveller.
