Little Red Robin finds its nest in Lane Cove

Tucked away on Birdwood Lane, in the buzzing village of Lane Cove, Little Red Robin Restaurant has landed, bringing sophisticated dining and a chic experience to the North Shore of Sydney.

Little Red Robin Restaurant is an intimate dining destination, boasting a carefully considered menu of sharing plates, served on stunning stoneware, accompanied by intriguing grape varieties and unusual wine styles exclusively from Europe and the Mediterranean.

Alessandro Nelli and Michelle Warren, the founders of Little Red Robin, started working on the vision around five years ago and had always imagined Little Red Robin taking inspiration from the Mediterranean, with a focus on reimagining classic recipes with a contemporary twist. At the helm of the kitchen is Head Chef Claudio Zannotti, whose resume includes experience in Michelin Star restaurants in Italy and the UK, and who was a finalist in the Queensland Young Chef of the Year 2016.

The menu offers dishes with delicate flavours where the produce has the opportunity to shine. The menu is built around a sharing concept, where diners can try different dishes and flavours. The wine selection is all about allowing diners to discover something new and unique exclusively from Europe and the Mediterranean, with some gems featuring on the list from Turkey, Greece, Austria and more.

For owner and manager Nelli, who grew up on a vineyard and olive grove in Tuscany, the restaurant embodies important memories from his home in Italy. “Our fondest memories are of little red robins singing and darting among the vines in the warm Tuscan afternoon sun, when days were filled with delicious food, luscious wine and laughter,” he says. “This is how we selected the name”.

When looking for a site, Nelli and Warren identified Lane Cove as an upcoming foodie area with lots of potential and loved the village atmosphere. The restaurant sits opposite a key development plot, The Rosenthal Project, due for completion in 2020. “We felt Birdwood Lane was a great spot due to the future residents, and that it was virtually a ‘hole in the wall’, which is what we were looking for!” says Nelli.

It’s easy to feel transported somewhere like Melbourne or even New York with the restaurant’s edgy, sophisticated interiors. With a focus of textures, rich fabrics and strong contemporary colours, matching stoneware; the main sharing plate exclusively designed and hand made by Ion Fukuzawa of Mukumono, who also collaborated with the likes of Ester and Six Penny. The stunning full copper bar is the pièce de résistance of the space, and diners can either sit at the bar or in the intimate dining room.

Locals have embraced their new ‘local’ and have been enjoying the Little Red Robin experience close to home on the North Side.

Little Red Robin is open from 4pm Tuesday for dinner and midday to midnight Wednesday to Saturday for lunch, aperitivo and dinner.
