Lizard Island Announces Spring Reopening

August 6, 2020 Resort News No Comments Email Email

Long-regarded as one of Australia’s most idyllic tropical island retreats, Lizard Island has announced it will reopen for visitors on September 26 this year, following a temporary closure due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Recently voted Travel + Leisure’s top Australian resort in its acclaimed World’s Best Awards 2020 list, Lizard Island is well-placed to welcome guests to its private setting at the northern end of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. The resort’s reopening comes at an ideal time to visit Queensland, when the days are warm and the nights are cool, ideal for both relaxing and exploring the reef.

With just 40 beach-house style suites catering to an intimate number of guests and more than 20 private beaches ready to be explored, an escape to Lizard Island promises the ultimate luxury: plenty of space to enjoy this island paradise with the ones who matter most.

Several new measures have been implemented at Lizard Island to allow an even more personally tailored guest stay and experience of the Great Barrier Reef. A new resort role includes a Guest Services Manager who will offer a personalised pre-arrival check-in in Cairns and help with finalising guests’ itineraries to make the most of their time on the island. Also on offer is a raft of private and guided experiences to be enjoyed exclusively with friends and family, including a private luxury boat charter for fishing, snorkelling and diving excursions on the reef.

Lizard Island’s guest areas are designed to offer a private getaway. Light-filled and offering generous indoor and outdoor lounging areas, suites are spaced to offer guests a place of their own along the island’s north-west coast, each offering views of Sunset Beach, Anchor Bay or verdant tropical gardens.

The relaxed open-air restaurant and bar welcome the gentle afternoon breeze and feature a daily-changing menu with fresh Queensland ingredients including locally caught seafood, as well as fine wines and premium beverages. Guests watch the sun set across the ocean while the resort’s naturalists share their knowledge of the wonders of the reef and the groundbreaking research and conservation initiatives underway.

An easy stroll across the sand to the Beach Club reveals the active options for the day: a cruise in a motorised dinghy to claim one’s own beach – with gourmet hamper with champagne as sustenance; a boat tour to see the island’s resident Green Sea turtles; a paddle in a clear-view kayak to view magnificent corals or choose to step with snorkel and fins straight from the beach to explore the magnificent underwater Giant Clam Gardens.

Greg Magi, Executive Director of Parks & Resorts for Delaware North, the operator of Lizard Island, said he hoped Australian travellers would choose now to visit the Great Barrier Reef as a renewed focus on domestic travel has brought the country’s many remarkable travel destinations to the fore.

“After a lengthy period spent staying at home, what better escape than a luxury getaway to Lizard Island where guests can do as much or as little as they like, with plenty of fresh air, no crowds and fabulous wining and dining to boot?” Mr Magi said.

Lizard Island is the northernmost island on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. With just 40 guest suites and villas offering direct access to more than 20 white-sanded beaches, an escape to Lizard Island is a luxuriously exclusive experience. Guests venture to remote snorkelling and diving spots on the inner and outer reefs where hundreds of vibrant fish and coral species thrive. Hikes retrace Captain Cook’s footsteps and offer panoramic views of the reef while the Australian Museum Lizard Island Research Station offers a fascinating insight into the day-to-day conservation of Lizard Island’s incredible natural environment.
