Everyone loves a good afternoon tea break and few can resist one themed around author Lewis Carroll’s fantasy tale, Alice In Wonderland. Come the month of February, luxury boutique hotel 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok invites you to tumble down the rabbit hole and take your place at the Mad Hatter’s table for an afternoon tea party inspired by the quirky world Alice fell into.

The Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea will be first served at the Bangkok Trading Post Bistro & Deli on Valentine’s Day, and over the next three weekends in February and March. Created in partnership with guest chef Penny Jirayuwatana, the afternoon tea set features whimsical tasty takes on sweet and savoury dishes designed to delight your senses, while enjoying the intimate atmosphere of the restaurant.

While her authentic British scones are the talk of the town, she is also renowned for her creative pastries. Chef Penny, better known as Penny the Chef, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), and has over 20 years experience in kitchens abroad, both in America and Europe, including the award-winning Dominique Ansel Bakery London, the 5-star Brown’s Hotel by Rocco Forte, London, Mandarin Oriental London, Mercer Kitchen by Jean George Vongerichten, New York. She is now based in Bangkok, and work as a chef consultant for bakeries, food factories, and airlines, in addition to TV appearances as a guest judge on Master Chef Thailand and Iron Chef Thailand.

To find out more about ‘White Rabbit’ and ‘who painted the roses red’, don’t be late to this tea party, where you’ll also learn “a few things about manners and find a few surprises”. Chef Penny puts a playful twist on the tradition of British afternoon tea with inspiration from the popular Victorian novel. It’s time to indulge your sweet tooth with the Tick Tock Gold Clock Macaroon, White Rabbit’s Carrot Pot, The Talking Flower Williams Pear Mousse, or tantalise your taste buds with all-time British favourites – Coronation Chicken and Marie Rose Prawn Cocktail sandwiches.  And because afternoon tea is never complete without scones, Chef Penny will serve her famous scones served warm with clotted cream and homemade fruit preserves. So now there’s really no excuse to miss this tea party.

The afternoon tea is paired to a wide selection of exceptional wild and free-grown teas. Sourced exclusively from organic tea producer, Monsoon Teas, the leaves come from the original Camellia Sinensis Assamica plant that originates in the mountain range that stretches from Assam in India, through Myanmar, Northern Thailand, and all the way to Yunnan in China. Planted generations ago in the forested hills of Northern Thailand by local farmers, the young leaves and buds are handpicked to make unique wonderfully deep, yet delicate, flavoured teas that are also organic. Choose from three tea collections: Classic Teas with flavours such as Jungle Oolong, Lahu Black, and Siam Blend Black; Infused Aromatic Teas with Lychee Oolong, Coconut Green, and Mango Black, or the Herbal, Non-Caffeine Teas, which includes Herbal Digestive and Herbal Relax.

The Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea set is available from 1 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day 14 February, and the following weekends of 16-17, 23-25 February, and 2-3 March. It is priced at THB 950++ per person, or THB 1,550++ per person with a demi bottle of Moët Rosé Impérial Champagne.
