Police have released a startling image of an alleged drug smuggler who tried to pass through airport security balancing a large wad of cocaine on his head, wrapped in a bag, and concealed under an incredibly obvious, oversized toupee.

The man, who police did not name, was arrested by airport police in Barcelona.

He was stopped during what police say was a blatant attempt to smuggle half a kilogram of cocaine into Spain by tucking it underneath an “oversized” hairpiece.

The man arrived in Barcelona on a flight from Bogota, Colombia – one of the world’s prime cocaine export ports, wearing an ill-fitting wig. Spanish police at Josep Tarradellas Airport noticed that the man looked nervous.

They also noticed the disproportionately large toupee he was wearing under his hat.

Immediately, police singled out the suspect for a search.

“Flip your wig!” police demanded.

Police didn’t have to search long, instantly spotting a big package stuck to the man’s head containing about EUR 30,000 (AUD 47,930) worth of cocaine.

Spain’s Policia Nacional released this photo of the suspect, his preposterously bad wig and the bag of cocaine allegedly concealed underneath it

A police statement, quoted by London’s Evening Standard, said: “There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers trying to mock controls.”

Police shared a photo of the middle-aged suspect still wearing the toupee, with his eyes blocked out in the image.
