In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Utah’s tourism industry will experience a generational game changer in the form of the brand new Salt Lake City International Airport. The first phase of the airport, opening September 15, promises incredible views, technology, efficiency, local art and a variety of local shops and restaurants. The new airport also offers absolute best practices in sanitation throughout the airport to maximize passenger confidence and safety as the world re-opens to travel.

Salt Lake City pivoted on Thursday (Salt Lake City time) doing the live unveiling ceremony online via live stream and recorded here: https://www.slcairport.com/unveiling/.

Pre-pandemic, a number of events had been planned for the last week of August to celebrate the opening of The New SLC, but had to be scaled back. A fly-through video to familiarize the public with the new airport can be found here.

The highlight of the ceremony was a 70’ x 25’ drape drop that revealed The Canyon art installation. In addition, a video capturing the construction and interspersed with interviews was shown, which is available at https://slcairport.com/thenewslc/rebuild-videos/.

The large-scale art installations—including The Falls and The Canyon—help to celebrate the natural beauty of Utah, explained Artist Gordon Huether. “We are delivering a totally immersive, inspired and powerful experience to all that enter here,” Huether said. The ceremony also included a performance by members of the Utah Symphony of “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Come Fly with Me,” with David Osmond as vocalist.
