Meet the Pacific Tourism Event Expands to Asia

The Meet the Pacific event for regional tourism stakeholders and potential customers in Europe is expanding to include Asia for the second year. The event commenced this week in Austria and will take place in ten countries until March 20.

In Asia, the event will be held in Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China. “SPTO and partners are continuously looking for new markets including Asia and we are optimistic that this will lead to an increased interest in the region which hopefully translate into visitor arrivals,” said SPTO Chief Executive Officer, Chris Cocker.

This augurs well with the 2019 China Pacific Tourism Year initiative that SPTO and China as a member country will implement in the coming months. The initiative promotes the Pacific to niche market segments in China and also helps Pacific tourism stakeholders to be ‘China Ready’.

A major highlight of the Asia leg of Meet the Pacific will be the launch of the Pacific Promotion Program for Trade, Investment & Tourism (PPTT) in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday 13th March. “The PPTT agreement between the Korean Government and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat was signed in October 2018 during the Korea-Pacific Island Countries Senior Officials meeting,” said Mr. Cocker

The PPTT will promote trade, investment and tourism between Korea and Pacific Island Countries in terms of job creation, economic development, including trade fairs, trade missions and market promotion. Mr. Cocker said the PPTT funding provided USD $1,000,000 over 2019-2020 for Trade and Tourism facilitation, “Tourism has been allocated USD $500,000 for the 2 years. This will be managed by SPTO and implemented by our Tourism Representative, Ms Daisy Park.”

Meet the Pacific is a one day event per city during which Pacific resort partners, national tourism organisations and airline partners who are marketing their services and properties, meet key Asian tour operators interested in selling Pacific destinations in Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia.

“We anticipate a successful Meet the Pacific for our members and partners, and are pleased to be supporting Rosie Holidays of Fiji and Turama Pacific of the Cook Islands for this event. I also congratulate Rosie Holidays for driving this for the past four years,” said SPTO Chief Executive Officer, Chris Cocker.

He said that Meet the Pacific is “South-South” cooperation at its best, “Rosie Holidays and other Fiji stakeholders initiated this and over the years invited other Pacific countries. This event contributes to increased awareness and visibility of the Pacific in Europe and Asia”

During Meet the Pacific, SPTO will also promote the 2019 South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) tradeshow to be held in New Zealand in May and encourage interested European and Asian buyers to attend the largest annual Pacific tourism tradeshow.

Meet the Pacific will be held in Austria, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic before moving to the Asian countries.
