Melbourne Airport celebrates Chinese culture during Lunar New Year

Melbourne Airport is celebrating Chinese New Year with a range of special performances, retail and hospitality offers and live music to mark the Year of the Pig.

Chinese lions and wealth gods will roam Melbourne Airport’s Terminal 2 throughout the week and members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform traditional Chinese folk songs for international jetsetters.

Melbourne Airport is also marking the occasion by launching a Lunar Luxe retail promotion, paying homage to the Year of the Pig, which represents wealth, good fortune and prosperity.

The airport is teaming up with luxury brands, lounges and hospitality venues to offer specials to travellers flying overseas. As part of the Lunar Luxe promotion one lucky person is set to win a return business class trip to China in partnership with China Eastern.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Retail Andrew Gardiner said it was important to recognise Chinese New Year as China is one of Melbourne’s strongest markets.

“China is one of our busiest international markets with approximately 1.4 million people flying both ways to and from China annually,” said Mr Gardiner.

“For the past three years Melbourne’s Chinese visitor market grew by 12.3 per cent annually, higher than the Australian average of 11.8 per cent.

“Summer is also one of the busiest times for inbound passenger travel and this year forecasts predict Melbourne Airport will welcome more than 145,000 people from China between January and February, making it an ideal time to celebrate and activate the terminal.”

Mr Gardiner said he hoped travellers enjoyed the Lunar New Year festivities.
