Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited recognizes the importance of sustainable sourcing and that our impact stretches far beyond our resort properties. Healthy and productive oceans are important for both marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them for their livelihoods. By making a choice to purchase seafood products from sustainable fisheries and farms, Melco recognizes the role it can play in promoting responsible management of fish stocks and the health of our oceans. Recently, Melco hosted a joint training workshop with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to share this vision and to raise awareness in sustainable seafood sourcing. The MSC is an international non-profit organization which recognizes and rewards efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future.

Over 30 Melco employees and 15 supplier representatives, many of whom were Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), attended the training sessions held at Melco’s corporate office in Macau. Topics covered included Melco’s vision towards sustainable seafood, an introduction to MSC, and the principles behind and the roll-out of the MSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification, as well as a presentation on the progressive development of certified wild capture fisheries in Asia.

Ms. Denise Chen, Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of Melco Resorts & Entertainment, said, “The ambitious environmental goals listed in Melco’s recently published Sustainability and CSR Report continue to focus our efforts in sustainability. In Food & Beverage, we are pleased to have introduced sustainable sourcing guidelines which outline our preference for wild-caught Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified seafood, as well as those certified by other international organizations such as Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP). We endeavor to continue increasing the percentage of seafood purchased from sustainable sources, and to engage a greater number of suppliers to support our efforts in the area through initiatives and events such as that of the recent training session with MSC.”

Trainer of the workshop, Ms. Sheryl Torres-Wu, Program Director, Southeast Asia & Hong Kong of MSC, pointed out, “We are glad to see Melco acting as a catalyst in sustainable sourcing; to stand at the forefront of driving changes from the end of the supply chain. We hope to continue our partnership with Melco to help raise awareness on sustainable seafood sourcing not only for suppliers, but also for consumers to understand the importance of sustainable fishing practices in protecting our oceans.”

After attending the training, Mr. Cheng Man Kit, Manager of Cheang Chong Kei Frozen Food Co. Ltd., commented, “Melco is the first integrated resorts operator to offer suppliers training opportunities on sustainable seafood sourcing in Macau. The session has helped to provide operational knowledge on the importance of sustainable seafood, and the tools through which it can be sourced. With increasing market demand for sustainable seafood, this training session has been really beneficial in helping suppliers like ourselves be able to offer seafood from certified sustainable sources”.
