Celebrating the works of contemporary masters, Melco has launched ‘Unexpected Encounters’, an art exhibition at City of Dreams. ‘Unexpected Encounters’ is part of Art Macao: International Art Exhibition, a six-month mega event showcasing the works of artists from around the world at a variety of exhibition venues in Macau, including at the Macao Museum of Art, the city’s foreign consulates, integrated resorts and hotels. Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR, Ms. Wang Dong, Deputy of Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macau SAR and Mr. Xu Jun, Deputy-Director General of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR were among some of the officiating guests present at the ‘Unexpected Encounters’ opening ceremony held today at Morpheus, City of Dreams.

Officiating guests attended a guided tour of the artworks led by Mr. Frederic Winckler, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer and Curator of the ‘Unexpected Encounters’ exhibition.

Continuing on from the success of City of Dreams’ ‘Ferrari: Under the Skin’, an exhibition featuring a collection of world’s rarest Ferraris for the first time ever in Macau, ‘Unexpected Encounters’ presents City of Dreams’ impressive art collection of contemporary masters, demonstrating how contemporary art has liberated itself from classical forms. The exhibition features works of renowned masters from each continent, exploring art in its many guises. Carefully curated, each work provides a unique and unexpected experience with the audience. Exhibition highlights include Good Intentions by KAWS, Fat Convertible by Erwin Wurm, 200 LITOFAIRHOUR by Charles Pétillon, Wild Pansy by Jean-Michel Othoniel, Continuel Lumière au Plafond by Julio Le Parc and 9 Seas by Mathieu Lehanneur.

Furthermore, Melco’s Hollywood-inspired integrated resort Studio City will present a selection of work inspired by the anime culture from artists from Japan and the rest of the world and form part of Melco’s contribution to Art Macao. Details of this exhibition will be revealed shortly.

Mr. Lawrence Ho, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Melco Resorts & Entertainment, said: “We are thrilled to bring such amazing contemporary works of art to City of Dreams to demonstrate world-class creativity to our guests. In particular, it is extraordinary to be showcasing many of these works at Morpheus, which is in itself an architectural masterpiece as the world’s first ever free-form exoskeleton high-rise architectural structure designed by legendary architect Dame Zaha Hadid. Through this exhibition and our participation at Art Macao, we look forward to continue contributing to the city’s art and cultural development.”

In addition, Melco supports and sponsors the works of two Belgian artists Benoit+Bo in two other projects underArt Macao, including the outdoor art installation Happy Heads located at the leisure area in Jorge Álvares Square, and the Prosperous Years art exhibition at the Old Court Building. The Prosperous Years art exhibition is also supported by the Consulate General of Belgium in Hong Kong and Macau.

Art Macao is hosted under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, and supported by Cultural Affairs Bureau and Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR Government, said: “We appreciate the efforts of all participating parties in mobilizing their resources in order to put together different forms of visual and performing arts for Art Macao. With Macao’s unique advantages in the region, we believe that Art Macao will contribute to the promotion of high aesthetic sense and humanistic spirit. This will in turn generate new driving forces to explore and develop the art and culture landscape of Macao.”
