Data compiled by the travel experts at KAYAK.com.au has shown that many Aussies are looking for a loved up staycation, rather than a grand, exotic getaway. Melbourne is the most searched travel destination this Valentine’s, boasting a +64% year-on-year increase in flight searches. Its renowned European-inspired culture, great food and shopping has won the hearts of lovebirds in 2019. Whilst there, visitors can try a plethora of romance-inducing activities including a cruise down the Yarra river, a candlelit Colonial Tramcar dinner or an evening tour of the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park.

Top ten most searched destinations for Valentine’s Day 2019

Whilst Melbourne is the overall winner for Valentine’s Day vacations, Australians are also looking further afield. New Delhi, India, came in at second place and has seen an increase in year-on-year searches of +53%.

Bali was crowned third place but surprisingly has seen a -6% year-on-year decrease in flight searches. Singapore, known for its state-of-the-art airport, opulent hotels and lavish lifestyle and entertainment has also seen a significant -24% year-on-year decrease in flight searches. Could Aussies be looking for more off-the-beaten-track romantic holidays, and moving further away from mainstream destinations?

Top five trending destinations for Valentine’s Day 2019

With romance top of mind, KAYAK’s new data has also revealed the top five trending destinations for Valentine’s Day this year. Aussies’ love for Asia continues to shine through with Phuket, Thailand coming out on top with a massive +174% year-on-year increase in flight searches. Colombo, Sri Lanka has also seen a +155% year-on-year increase in flight searches. With beautiful sightseeing opportunities including the Galle Face Green, Gangaramaya Temple and National Museum of Colombo, this up-and-coming city is a great destination for couples who are looking for a spot of adventure.

Bangkok, Thailand and Sapporo, Japan have both seen decent year-on-year flight search increases of +78% and +67% respectively. Melbourne is the only non-Asian city on the trending list, having seen a +64% year-on-year increase in flight searches and still taking the cake as the most popular destination for Valentine’s Day.
