Mystery El Al diversion to Canada on way to Israel

Mystery surrounded the sudden diversion of an El Al Israel Airlines flight, en route from New York JFK to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, for an emergency landing in Canada at the weekend.

Flight ELY008 left JFK airport early Sunday morning on its way to Israel but instead put down at Goose Bay Airport in Labrador, on the far northeast edge of Canada, where it landed safely. Emergency and rescue service crews met it on landing, Hebrew news site 0404 reported.

A passenger said he felt the entire plane shake and drop precipitously.

Simon Hradecky’s authoritative Aviation Herald said the El Al B747-400 had declared emergency after flight crew advised they had received a wheel well fire indication but were unable to determine which wheel well and there was no associated temperature indication.

“The aircraft diverted to Goose Bay for a safe landing about 70 minutes later.”

El Al is one of the most security conscious airlines in the world and any deviation from route or schedule is taken seriously.

The plane was grounded in Goose Bay for hours, with passengers held on the plane and no meals served, though passengers grew hungry.

“Everyone is very edgy now but trying to remain calm,” one passenger told

“It would help if they would serve food, but for some reason, the staff is refusing to do so.”

A couple of clips taken on the plane in Goose Bay can be viewed on the site:

The Aviation Herald reported that a replacement B747-400 was eventually sent from New York to Goose Bay to pick up the passengers and take them to Tel Aviv.
