National Geographic Travel has nominated Lord Howe Island among its picks for the top 25 travel destinations for 2021 in its Best of the World list.

Inclusion in the prestigious list is a real boost for the tiny World Heritage-listed island situated some 600 kilometres off Australia’s east coast island, which reopened in October following an seven-month closure this year due to the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Lord Howe shares the listing honour with some of the world’s most remote and remarkable destinations, from Cerrado in Brazil and Yellowknife in Canada to Hortobágy in Hungary and Alonissos in Greece, making a formidable list for intrepid travellers planning a next trip.

The National Geographic Travel endorsement comes after Lord Howe was named among the world’s Top 5 destinations from Lonely Planet in 2020.

National Geographic Travel Executive Editor George Stone said the list was well-timed ahead of a new year and the promise of return to travel.

“We are eager to share these 25 timely tales of timeless places that will define our future itineraries,” Mr Stone said.

“Reported by the global editors of National Geographic Travel and framed by five categories (Adventure, Culture and History, Nature, Family, Sustainability), these superlative destinations speak of resilient communities, innovative conservation efforts, and thrilling opportunities for future explorations,” he said.

Lord Howe Island Tourism Association Executive Officer Trina Shepherd said the island was an ideal destination for travellers seeking a pristine natural wonderland with plenty to do outdoors, from hiking to snorkelling the world’s southernmost coral reef.

“There’s so much to discover on Lord Howe and with visitor numbers limited to just 400 at any one time, the island’s incredible ecosystem is protected now and for the future as ‘the world’s last paradise’,” Ms Shepherd said.
