National polling of Australians shows that three out of four drivers (75%) would feel more comfortable sharing the road with cyclists if there are separated bike lanes. The Amy Gillett Foundation commissioned polling that shows massive support for safe separate cycling infrastructure.

Earlier this month, national cycling safety charity Amy Gillett Foundation launched a campaign on World Bicycle Day calling for rapid investment in temporary, separated bike lanes across Australia. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have announced investment and roll-out of bike lanes, but national investment and leadership is required to ensure this progress extends to all Australian towns and cities.

The AGF recommends at least $300million be allocated from the $3.8billion infrastructure commitment made in late Nov 2019, by the Federal Government and this investment could be made immediately as part of the recent $500million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure announcement last month (22 May, 2020).

Dan Kneipp, CEO Amy Gillett Foundation says, “We know that safety is a critical barrier to cycling participation. We also know that temporary separated bike lanes will help cyclists feel safe to ride and that drivers will feel more comfortable sharing the road with cyclists if there is separation. Now is the time to invest in active transport.”
