Yoga Beyond Exercise: Three Poses to Help Boost Psychological Health

Yoga is known for challenging your stamina, flexibility, balance and strength. The ancient practice can also be great as a tool to improve mental wellbeing.  The Pancha Kosha-Balanced Approach of Yoga Therapy (PK-BAYT) is consequently used by practitioners to improve psychological health, in the belief that by balancing one’s ‘prana’ (basic life energy in and out of the body) with our intellect, we can master our emotions. Yoga therapy works on the principle that once the mind is calm, it is able to operate with logic and is able to deal with situations in a rational way that contributes to the healthy functioning of the physical body. Dr. Anand, COMO Shambhala expert based at COMO Cocoa Island in the Maldives, shares three asanas (poses) that aid mental tranquillity.

Viparita Karani (Legs up the wall)

This is a brilliant pose for improving blood circulation and stimulating the nervous system, helping with relaxation. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes a decrease in cortisol levels, helping to calm anxiety, depressive moods and insomnia. Practicing this pose increases strength, flexibility and mindfulness.

Uttanasana (Standing forward bend)

Uttanasana’s upside-down hang creates a sense of tranquility while requiring concentration to keep balanced, maintaining a brain that is engaged yet relaxed. This pose relaxes your central nervous system and calms the mind, as well as reducing fatigue and headache. It promotes mental clarity that can elevate the mood and increase energy. It often builds memory, trains focus and provides a restful sleep while stretching the hamstrings.

Shavasana (Corpse pose)

This is the final pose in most yoga routines because of its excellent relaxing effect. As you lie on your back with your arms by your side and your palms up, it eases your body and restores energy after a taxing practice. Slow diaphragmatic breathing is integral to this posture. From a yogic perspective, the breath is a bridge between mind and body; the key to quieting the mind is deepening the breath. Practicing shavasana combines physical rest with yogic breathing to regain mental stability and connect to stillness.

The Eating Edit: Refresh Your Fridge and Refresh Your Diet

COMO understands the desire to find a healthy balance while at home, and one of the best ways to start maintaining that lifestyle is by refreshing your fridge. COMO Group Nutritionist, Eve Persak has put together four simple tips to kick-start a diet that will last.

1. Clean Out

Toss out all overlooked takeaway containers that have been tucked away in the recesses of your fridge. Review all ‘use by’ dates and send anything that has expired to the bin. Nix store bought products that are laden with chemical preservatives, synthetic sweeteners and artificial dyes or flavourings. You’ll give your body’s detoxification systems a much-needed hiatus from processing and filtering out these unnatural substances.

Take this time to cut back on highly processed carbs, such as sugar and refined grains that are stripped of much of their nutrients and fibre. These items cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, often resulting in undesirable effects on your appetite, insulin sensitivity and weight.

2. Clean Up

Wipe down all the shelves, walls, storage cabinets and bottles with a mixture of vinegar and warm water, or an eco-friendly antibacterial cleaning solution.

3. Rearrange

After removing unwanted items, organise what you have. Where you put your food in the fridge matters as it can prolong the life of products and steer your food choices.

4. Restock

With space created and all in proper order, it’s time to bring in the nutrition. Stock up on fresh produce, herbs, nuts, seeds and fiber-rich foods.

COMO Cuisine: Healthy Home Cooking: Macadamia Nut Pizza

Butternut Pumpkin and Macadamia Nut Pizza with Tomato, avocado, mango and basil

This recipe offers a healthy alternative to the regular fat-laden pizzas – great if you’re looking for a nourishing dish that will please the whole family. Close your eyes and you’ll be convinced you’re eating the real thing.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Pizza Base

  • 135g/4¾oz (1 cup) raw macadamia nuts

  • 130g/4½oz (¾ cup) sunflower seeds

  • 25g/1oz (¼ cup) flaxseed meal

  • 130g/4½oz (¾ cup) almond meal (flour)

  • 240g/8½oz (2¼ cup) butternut pumpkin, peeled and grated

  • 7.5g/¼oz (½ cup) flat-leaf parsley, chopped

  • 10g/⅓oz (½ cups) basil leaves, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons chopped oregano

  • 2 tablespoons coconut nectar or agave nectar (G)

  • Sea salt, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon liquid aminos or tamari soy (G)

Pine Nut ‘Cheese’

  • 310g/11oz (2 cups) pine nuts

  • 60ml (¼ cup) lemon juice

  • Sea salt, to taste

Raw Tomato Sauce Makes 500ml (2 cups)

  • 350g/12oz (2 cups) sun-dried tomatoes, soaked in warm water for 2 hours

  • 1 vine-ripened tomato

  • ½ small onion, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 60ml (¼ cup) extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon raw honey

  • 1 pinch red chilli flakes

  • Sea salt, to taste

Lemon Dressing Makes 180ml (¾ cup)

  • 60ml (¼ cup) freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 60ml (¼ cup) extra-virgin olive oil

  • Sea salt and ground white pepper, to taste
