The top three beaches in the world are Grace Bay (Turks & Caicos Islands), Pink Sands Beach (Harbor Island, Bahamas) and Anse Source D’Argent (La Digue Island, Seychelles).

While Grace Bay and Pink Sand Beach both scored 20 out of 20 in the visitor ratings for the beaches themselves, Pink Sands Beach missed out the top spot due to it seeing fewer days of sunshine a year, at 223 days compared to Grace Bay’s 319.

The third best beach, Anse Source D’Argent, scored well for weather, restaurants and activities but its lack of nightlife brought the overall score down to 88 out of 100.

Sun, sea and sand

For most people, beach holidays are about the sun and sea above all else so the weather is a big factor in choosing where to visit. We looked at the average air temperature across the destinations analysed and found that Playa Norte, on Isla Mujeres, Mexico was the hottest destination with an average temperature of 30 degrees celsius.

But if that sounds a little too hot to handle we found plenty of beaches where the average temperature is a balmy 25-27 degrees, including; Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue Island in the Seychelles, Varadero Beach, Cuba and Diani Beach, Kwale County, Kenya.

If almost-guaranteed sunshine is a must for you then Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi, Thailand would be a great bet as this beach sees an average of 352 days of sunshine a year. Maya Bay also has one of the warmest sea temperatures on the list, along with Railay Beach, Thailand, where the water temperature averages at 28.9 degrees.

Activities and comforts

If you’re looking for adventure, Railay Beach, Thailand would be a good choice as this beach came out as the best for activities overall, having 11 different activities to choose from and an average activity visitor rating of 4.9 out of 5.

The beach with the most activities to choose from, however, is Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi, Thailand with a whopping 61 activities on offer. The beaches with the highest rated visitor activities overall are Varadero Beach, Cuba; Anse Source D’Argent, La Digue Island, Seychelles; Hidden Beach, El Nido, Philippines – all having an impressive 5 out 5 visitor rating for activities.

For night owls and party animals, we also looked at the nightlife on offer at the world’s best beaches and found that Grace Bay, Turks & Caicos Islands, is the best destination overall with a visitor rating of 5 out of 5 for its nightlife. While Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic has the most options when it comes to nightlife, with 19 major bars and nightclubs close by.

To avoid the crowds, we looked at the beaches with the fewest hotels within easy reach and combined this with the number of nearby restaurants with a great visitor rating to find out which beach is the best for creature comforts. Malmok Beach, Noord, Aruba came out on top with just 5 hotels nearby, all having a visitor rating of 4 or more, and an average rating of 4.5 for its local restaurants.

So whether you’re next summer holiday is set to be busy with nightlife and activities or a relaxing soak in the sun, you’ll find your ideal beach destination here.
