New Sustainability Workshops for Sydneysiders at The Calyx

Do you wonder what else you could be doing to help the environment and looking for inspiration? Or are you interested in learning about being plastic free? To accompany the current free Pollination display, a new program of sustainability themed events will launch in the autumn season at The Calyx in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

Growing Green(er) Families is the first in a series of talks and workshops on Sustainable Living at The Calyx and is led by Kin and Kind. This is your chance to hear from real (kick-ass) women who have shaped their homes & communities. The panel includes Jess Miller, Deputy Lord Mayor, City of Sydney & Alex Elliot-Howery, Cornersmith and Laura Cunningham, Waste Warrior and midwife which will be moderated by Shevonne Hunt from Kinderlings Kids Radio. Plus they will be running the inaugural Kin & Kind kids clothing swap, in partnership with Perfectly Preloved.

If you want to reduce the use of chemical-laden household products and plastic food packaging, the Plastic Free Living workshop is a great way to learn the ropes. This two-hour workshop by Margaret Mossakowska, a sustainability educator, will explore ways to eliminate plastic from our lives by suggesting alternatives to common products. Plus, you will learn how to make a safe beeswax food wrap that you can take home.

Next in the Sustainable Living series is the Introduction to Fermenting workshop. Fermenting is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and enriches it by the action of bacteria and fungi. In this two-hour workshop participants will be joined by Margaret Mossakowska who will run a short presentation about the benefits of fermenting and about making ferments for health and beauty. She will then run a practical workshop where you will make a jar of delicious sauerkraut to take away with you.

For those that are looking to avoid artificial additives present in man-made pharmaceuticals, the Power of Healing Herbs workshop will teach you how to make herbal preparations – medicinal treatments for common ailments. From calming tisanes, strengthening tinctures and throat gargles to burn gels and bruises ointments, herbs should be a part of first aid kits at home. Margaret Mossakowska will run a short presentation about healing herbs and how to make your own. She will then run a practical workshop where you will make a medicinal ointment and a small bottle of a headache tincture.

The last workshop in the Sustainability Series is the Natural Skincare workshop. Did you know that you can make your own, natural skincare products from common pantry items, fruit and herbs grown in your garden? In this two hour workshop you will be joined by Margaret Mossakowska who will run a short presentation about the benefits of making your own products, with recipes and techniques on how to make your own. She will then run a practical workshop where you will make a small jar of cold cream to take away with you.
