Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and sponsored by VitrA, the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial collaborates with Z33 – House for Contemporary Art and C-mine Genk to bring over 100 projects exhibited at the biennial in the autumn of 2018 in Istanbul to Belgium. A continuation of the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial – A School of Schools after having shown in Istanbul and Atelier Luma in Arles, the exhibition will meet the visitors in Belgium from 28 June to 29 September 2019.

With the Bauhaus celebrating its centenary this year, A School of Schools explores how design is learning and learning is design. Comprising a selection of more than 100 projects from the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, the exhibition is curated by Jan Boelen, artistic director of Z33 – House for Contemporary Art. Commenting on the exhibition, Boelen says: “It would seem that design itself is changing, no longer simply about consumable products. The projects on display show snapshots in ongoing research into how we can renegotiate knowledge and power.”

A creative hub in Genk, C-mine is a site that has been converted from its original use for mineral extraction in the 20th century, into a location for the incubation of creative industries in the 21st century. The installation, which was designed by Aslı Çiçek using the exhibition system by Lukas Wegwerth, is interspersed throughout the C-mine building.

A School of Schools’ Belgium edition is an initiative of lstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and Z33 – House for Contemporary Art, in collaboration with C-mine Genk. The exhibition is supported by the Turkish Embassy in Brussels and Turkish Airlines.
