Number of passengers at Schönefeld and Tegel continues to rise

August 6, 2020 Airport No Comments Email Email

The passenger numbers at Tegel and Schönefeld Airports continue to increase. Last Sunday, the two airports recorded more than 31,000 passengers for the first time since the start of the corona pandemic. On 2nd August, around 21,000 passengers took off and landed in Tegel, around 10,400 in Schönefeld. In July, the two airports collectively handled roughly 693,000 air travellers and thus more than four times as many as in the previous month of June with only 167,891 passengers. Approximately 465,300 passengers took off and landed in Tegel in July and 228,500 in Schönefeld. Thus, passenger numbers are still down significantly on the previous year, by 79%.

For the last few weeks, return travellers have been able to be tested for corona virus directly in the airports at Schönefeld and Tegel. So far, several hundred people per day have voluntarily taken advantage of this. Meanwhile preparations are underway at both airports for the tests announced by the federal government for returnees from high-risk areas. Both in Schönefeld and in Tegel, large areas in the terminals are being prepared.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Berlin Brandenburg Airport GmbH: “The growing numbers of passengers shows that the trust in the processes at the airports and in the airlines is increasing. The corona-testing sites play an important role in this. Already several hundred passengers are voluntarily being tested every day. We assume that the mandatory tests will also be met with acceptance, making flying a little bit safer for everyone”.

The July traffic report with the final figures can be found online at the end of the month:
