Gavin Harris, Commercial Director for Skyscanner is a keynote speaker at the CAPA Australia Summit on Wednesday, 2 September, presenting travel insights from the global flight search and travel company.  Harris will share data around COVID-19’s impact on the aviation sector and total travel industry, including search and booking trends on Skyscanner, as well as global traveller sentiment analysis.

Skyscanner has been analysing traveller search behaviour and monitoring traveller sentiment through a weekly Travel Pulse survey of approximately 10,000 travellers across 19 markets. Over the last 6 months, the company has used a combination of behavioural data, surveys and qualitative interviews to understand the mindset of travellers as the pandemic progresses.

Globally, 19% of travellers believe it’s safe to travel internationally right now – this is a decline from just a few short weeks ago when 25% were willing to travel. In Australia, the numbers are even more conservative with just 11% believing it’s safe to travel at the moment.

The numbers are slightly more positive when looking at domestic travel; 42% of global travellers and 25% of Australians believe it’s safe to travel domestically right now.

Generally, travellers are far more optimistic when it comes to travel plans for 2021 however, with 47% of global travellers and 60% of Australians believing it will be safe to travel internationally again in six months’ time.

Harris will also share data from Skyscanner’s Travel Insight product, which analyses search and booking trends over time. The tool enables businesses who are interested in how travel demand is returning to make smarter, faster decisions and guide their Covid-19 recovery plans.

“We have all seen the devastating impact of the pandemic on the travel industry, with aviation one of the hardest hit sectors,” said Gavin Harris, Commercial Director for Skyscanner. “Travellers are anxious about returning to the skies and our data since March reflects that. However, we are seeing an upturn in searches globally over the last six weeks and there is a lot of optimism amongst travellers for the return to international travel in 2021. Right now, our focus is on assisting airlines and airport in their recovery planning efforts, and understanding travellers and demand is paramount to that.”
