The Philippines Department of Tourism (PDOT) is celebrating after securing two major awards at the 2019 World Travel Awards, following intensified tourism efforts in the archipelago. After a significant increase in visitor arrivals for the country in the past year, the PDOT was awarded “Asia’s Leading Tourism Board” and “Asia’s Leading Dive Destination.”

The award follows a recent report carried out by the PDOT which indicated a 14.08 percent year-on-year increase in international inbound traffic to the Philippines. According to the report, a total of 5,554,950 visitors between January to August 2019, indicating that foreign visitors’ interest in the Philippines continues to rise.

Philippines Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat thanked everyone involved in winning the award, marking the win as a great triumph. She said,

“We are greatly honoured and thankful for this recent recognition for the Philippines at the World Travel Awards. A triumph as great as this simply could not be possible without the combined hard work from the government, industry partners, and tourism stakeholders in realizing a more-upward tourism industry for the country. This is not the PDOT’s alone, but for all Filipinos to celebrate.”

Home to well over 7,000 islands, filled with colourful coral and an abundance of marine life, it is no surprise that the Philippines also took home top spot for Asia’s Leading Dive Destination. In the country’s National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2016-22, the Philippines identified Dive Tourism as a key area to positively affect industry growth in terms of increased visitor count, extended length of stay, and higher tourism revenue, among others.

Norjamin Delos Reyes, Tourism Attaché at Philippine Department of Tourism Australia and New Zealand, said,

“Since 2006 we have received a number of nominations for both Asia’s Leading Dive Destination and the World’s Leading Dive Destination, so we are absolutely thrilled to be awarded the win this year. We have been working hard to promote a world-class Philippine dive tourism that is anchored on sustainability and inclusivity and our efforts are beginning to show. The Philippines is home to thousands of dive sites, most of which exhibit stunning reefs and sea life and is perfect for professional and amateur divers, as well as snorkellers.”

This year’s World Travel Awards gala for Asia and Oceania was held recently at the picturesque Phu Quoc island in Vietnam, unveiling the finest travel brands in Asia and Oceania. Since 1993, the World Travel Awards has offered a global programme to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.
