A new guide book by Phoenix author Paul Fiarkoski features 50 must-see natural wonders in the Grand Canyon State.He created the book to help more people discover Arizona adventures and journal their experiences.
“It all started when I went on a hiking trip to Havasupai Falls in 2014,” Fiarkoski said. “That experience inspired me to seek out more fascinating places in Arizona, so I started a bucket list. I decided to put it into a book format in 2019.”
After a short introduction, the guide provides two pages for each of the 50 featured sites. On the left side is a page providing an overview of the site with tips on best time to visit, permit fees and travel directions. On the right side is a journal page with writing prompts for date visited, weather conditions, guests and special memories.
In September 2019, Fiarkoski spent eight days road-tripping around Navajo Nation to gather material for the book.
“Eight days and I barely scratched the surface of roughly one fourth of the state,” Fiarkoski said. “What an amazing place of beautiful landscapes and people with a deep connection to the land.”
When pressed for his favorite spots by Phoenix TV personality Kristen Keogh, Fiarkoski instead offered these five underrated places: Petrified Forest National Park, Lower Salt River, Mindeleff Cavates, Madera Canyon and Keet Seel Canyon.
“Petrified Forest National Park is an outdoor museum for trees from a prehistoric era,” Fiarkoski wrote in the book. “They fell thousands of years ago and were fossilized by minerals in the ground. Experience the beauty of the Painted Desert in the northern half of the 28-mile long park.”
Early reviews of the book have been very positive. Readers rave about the user-friendly layout and insights into unique places to explore. People really like the journal format, too.
