Plane makes emergency landing after passenger turns green

A Dubai-bound long-haul international flight has diverted and made an emergency landing after passengers displayed alarming symptoms, with some saying they felt they were suffocating and at least one reported to have turned green.

Fearing an outbreak of mass poisoning aboard, the pilot decided to declare an emergency and divert to the southern Russian city of Volgograd. The airline was Ural Airlines, flying an Airbus A321 from Moscow to Dubai.

The emergency occurred about one hour and 25 minutes into the flight.

London’s Sun newspaper quoted a passenger describing fears of “some kind of plague”. Those affected were mainly seated between economy class rows 21 and 26 and some were said to have “greatly dilated pupils”.

Five ambulances met the flight at Volgograd, with doctors and paramedics rushing aboard and several passengers removed for urgent medical treatment.

A woman passenger from Sochi told the Sun she was woken by a young woman screaming for assistance because her husband was feeling really bad.

“He was suffocating and he couldn’t breathe in. His face went the colour green — then a panic swept through the plane.”

Of the five passengers removed for treatment, three decided to continue the flight and two were admitted to hospital.

The plane was thoroughly checked and departed again for Dubai after a two-hour delay.

Investigators are trying to establish whether those affected knew each other or ate together before the flight.

Ural Airlines – Russia’s third largest air carrier by passenger numbers after Aeroflot Group and S7 Group – expects to carry over 10 million passengers this year.
