During the Christmas holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg, the amount of passengers at Schönefeld Airport and Tegel Airport is once again set to increase considerably. Around 1.29 million passengers are expected in the entire holiday period. With the last day of school, the 20th of December 2019, comes the wave of Christmas travellers and the busiest weekend. From the 20th to the 23rd of December, almost 340,000 passengers will fly to and from Berlin. Both airports will also be particularly crowded after the Christmas holidays, between the 27th and 29th of December 2019. The holiday return traffic at both airports will lead to increased passenger numbers on January 2 and 3, 2020. The most popular travel destinations during the Christmas season include Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain, Istanbul in Turkey, as well as Rome and Venice in Italy.
Allow for waiting times at check-in, passport control and security
Due to the large number of passengers during the Christmas holidays, passengers must prepare for waiting times at check-in as well as at passport control and security. In order to ensure the most relaxed start to your trip, the airport company recommends that all passengers allow for enough time for their arrival, that they are at the terminal at least two hours before departure, and that they prepare themselves for their flight as best as possible before even arriving at the airport:
Use online check-in – offered by many airlines free of charge.
Stay informed on the status of your flight and the local circumstances at the airport.
Pack your checked-in luggage and hand luggage conforming to the guidelines and check all papers of those travelling with you already at home.
Pass check-in and security as quickly as possible.
Prohibited items in checked-in luggage
E-cigarettes, power banks and lighters do not belong in checked-in luggage, but can be packed to a certain extent in hand luggage or carried on your person. Fireworks are allowed in neither hand luggage nor checked-in luggage.

Automatic luggage check-in
Passengers flying with easyJet and Lufthansa can check in their luggage themselves. Self-service kiosks and luggage check-in machines were installed for this purpose in Schönefeld at Terminal B (easyJet), and in Tegel at Terminal C (easyJet) and Terminal B (Lufthansa).
